ABSTRACT:

Cloud computing, a relatively new thing, has been adopted as part of the
computing strategy of companies large and small all over the world. Many businesses
have discovered the cost and flexibility benefits of cloud computing and are utilizing
various cloud computing models to solve business problems. The case focuses on four
key players and their cloud computing strategies: (Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure,
Google Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud.

Case Study - Cloud Wars Go Global 5

Question - 01: How do the four companies’ cloud business strategies

differ from each other?

In 2008, AWS was the first to offer cloud computing and infrastructure as a
service, and it has never looked back, rapidly launching new services and
developing its own compute stack to be more efficient and pass those savings
on. AWS's capabilities have expanded far beyond cloud computing and storage.
If Arm-based processors become the industry standard, the industry should
thank AWS, which released a second-generation Graviton processor and
instances based on it. AWS's Graviton and Nitro abstraction layers, if effective,
could be a differentiator in the cloud wars.

AI and machine learning services are being implemented. AWS has all the
pieces in place to be the de facto cloud machine learning stack, with SageMaker
and use cases all the way to the contact centre. Application development for
AWS-integrated 5G, cloud, and edge computing. A 5G collaboration with
Verizon is expected to serve as a proving ground for moving AWS computing
nodes to the edge.

I. The storey is simple and straightforward: Microsoft Azure and AWS are
competing to be the best cloud service provider. In reality, the two foes
barely rhyme. Here's why:
II. There are no publicly available statistics on Azure sales as of yet.
Although it is buried in the commercial cloud, Azure is the portion of
Microsoft's cloud business that most closely resembles AWS.
III. The commercial cloud consists of a collection of Microsoft's various
services. Microsoft Azure benefits from its presence in the software-as-a-
service market.
IV. Microsoft Azure benefits from its software-as-a-service presence. The
truth is that we could simply switch Microsoft from IaaS to SaaS because
the majority of their revenue comes from Office 365, Dynamics, and a

slew of other cloud services that are software-based rather than

infrastructure-based.
The Google Cloud Platform and its Anthos platform are vying for a piece of the
digital transformation pie. Furthermore, the cloud service provider intends to
grow into key industries such as retail and finance. Google Cloud Platform has
just completed a year in which it has grown its strategy, sales team, and
differentiated offers while simultaneously encountering performance
challenges. It will also be the target of scare tactics based on the premise that
Google would rather leave a company than be ranked third behind AWS and
Azure. Google Cloud, on the other hand, is benefiting from COVID-19 and
Google Meet, as well as establishing a multicloud workload management
approach.

I. Google Cloud now offers Cloud Premium Support to corporate clients;

II. Google Cloud now integrates Kaggle with BigQuery;
III. Google Cloud now supports VMware workloads;
IV. Google Cloud Platform now offers BigQuery Reservations to businesses.

Alibaba has developed swiftly thanks to a bevvy of corporate partners. It's still
unclear whether Alibaba will be able to expand outside of China. Alibaba, in
any case, has a long runway ahead of it.

Alibaba reported cloud computing sales of $1.3 billion in the September

quarter, increasing 64 percent year over year. This equates to a yearly run-rate
of more than $6 billion. The most eye-opening fact was that Alibaba Cloud is
used by 59 percent of China's publicly traded companies.

While Alibaba Cloud may go unnoticed by consumers primarily focused on the

EU and US, it may be a preferred cloud vendor for Chinese businesses. Alibaba
Cloud is building strategic ties with key enterprise vendors in order to achieve
this goal, and it is largely considered as Asia's leading cloud service provider.

I. Alibaba Cloud will offer a managed MongoDB service.

II. Alibaba celebrates the dawn of the 'data intelligence' era, but faces
security concerns due to Chinese ties.
III. Alibaba has been named Salesforce's sole provider in China; Alibaba
Cloud has expanded into Brazil.
IV. Alibaba Cloud has opened its second data center in Japan.
V. Alibaba Cloud has partnered with Intel on artificial intelligence.

Question - 02: Who will be the cloud winner in the battle of worldwide
market share in 2025? Who will be the winner in southeast Asia? And
why?

Amazon, in my opinion, will win the worldwide cloud market dominance

struggle in 2025. Despite announcing just last month that it would shut down
its online retail business in China, Amazon is betting that its cloud computing
operations can grow there.

On April 25, Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud computing arm,
announced the opening of a cluster of data centres in Hong Kong, marking the
company's eighth Asia-Pacific area.

On the same day's earnings call, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said, "The
company in China is performing exceptionally well, and we continue to see
strong growth there." "With the addition of Hong Kong, we now have a
footprint of 19 cities throughout China." As a result, it's still a terrific storey for
us." AWS has since partnered with two local providers, one in Beijing and the
other in Ningxia Province. The company announced plans to build three
additional data centres in China last month. "AWS follows all norms and
regulations in all of its locations, including Hong Kong and mainland China.

The Southeast Asia cloud services market is expected to generate $40.32 billion
in revenue by 2025, according to Adroit Industry Research, driven by rising
demand for cloud computing among developing small and medium businesses.

As governments around the region strive for greater cloud control, several have
enacted regulations similar to those in China, requiring cloud service providers
to store data in local data centres.

For example, Indonesia determined that financial information should be

retained within the country's borders. AWS has announced intentions to
establish a number of data centres in Jakarta, which currently has two Alibaba
Cloud data centres.

Question - 03: If you could invest $ 1 million in each of cloud business

(only), how would you allocate your investment? And why?

Decision-makers from around the world AWS was the first to establish a
considerable presence. It grew swiftly, utilising the most advanced and
comprehensive technologies available. It pioneered infrastructure-as-a-service
and expanded its offerings to encompass the internet of things, artificial
intelligence, virtual reality, and data analytics, all of which represent the
technological future and will benefit investors in the long run. Netflix,
LinkedIn, and Facebook are some of Amazon's customers, and they are
examples of significant digital enterprises that will provide a strong return on
investment.

Amazon Web Services:

(AWS) earned $13.5 billion in the first quarter of 2021, exceeding analyst
expectations of $13.1 billion. The number was $10.33 billion in the first quarter
of 2020. AWS sales increased by 32% in the third quarter, following a 28%
increase the previous quarter. This quarter, AWS sales accounted for 12% of
Amazon's total revenue and more than 47% of Amazon's total operating profits.
The success of AWS will benefit the entire organisation.

Microsoft Azure:

In contrast to Amazon, which discloses AWS revenue, Microsoft only discloses

Azure's growth rate. This figure represents a 50% increase in revenue over the
previous quarter, which is faster than the projected 46% increase. Growth was
reported to be 59 percent at the same time last year. When those percentages of
revenue growth are compared, you might see headlines stating that "Azure
growth rates are falling." However, given Azure's massive income growth, the
statistic's veracity is called into question.

Here are the earnings numbers provided by Microsoft. Azure is part of

Microsoft's "Intelligent Cloud" segment, which grew by 23% to $15.1 billion.
The operating group also includes server goods and cloud services (26 percent
growth).

Alibaba Cloud:

Alibaba's cloud sales increased 37 percent year on year to $2.6 billion. "The
decreased revenue increase during the quarter was largely attributable to
revenue reduction from a top cloud client in the Internet business," they say.
This client, who has a significant presence outside of China and has previously
used our foreign cloud services, has opted to end the partnership with regard to
their international company owing to non-product related requirements." They
think that their remaining cloud clients are diverse enough to avoid such a big
effect from a single customer in the future.

I have also done for Google Cloud Platform: Google Cloud generated $4.047
billion in sales this quarter, a 46 percent increase year on year. The operating
losses were $974 million, down from $1.73 billion the previous year.

It should be noted that Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace are both
part of the Google Cloud organisation (formerly G Suite).

Like the other behemoths, Alphabet emphasized its cloud expansion. "We're
incredibly pleased with Google Cloud's ongoing momentum," said Google and
Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat, "with sales of $4.0 billion in the quarter showing
strength and opportunity in both GCP and Workspace."

We would invest in Google because, aside from cloud computing, such as Pixel
devices, Google Glass, Drive services, or even the Play Store, it has the best
possibility of forming profitable commercial relationships. In addition,
Google's cloud business has grown the most in the last year, compared to AWS,
which has grown the least, and MS Azure, which has grown owing to high costs.

Question - 04: What are the potential strategies of the cloud business with
each company’s non-cloud businesses? How do they differ?

Synergies will be formed between Google's own services and goods, starting
with Google (such as smartphones and web browser services...). This will be
performed by establishing a network that connects it to the Google Cloud
System. This would help the company to maintain a consistent flow of
information across all of its divisions, resulting in enhanced communication,
productivity, and, as a result, customer interaction (making it seamless).

Concerning AWS, they could work cooperatively with some other Amazon's
businesses by continuing to support them, improving accurate forecasts to make
better decisions, consolidating the digital and offline parts to cover consumers'
requirements on both fields, offers a smooth experience, assisting them, and
staying in continuous interaction with them at every consumer touchpoint.By
conquering these services, partnerships, and synergies, they will be able to
better predict demand and consumers' requirements in order to better serve
them, as well as create a difference and develop a loyalty and long-term
connection, which will give them with significantly more revenue (because it is
more valuable and difficult keeping a client than getting a new one to buy your
product for the first time). Microsoft Azure may certainly benefit from their
market position as a result of services such as Windows or Office. Because

Microsoft creates and manufactures gadgets, it is quite simple to integrate their

cloud service onto these PCs and various units.

By focusing on industry verticals like healthcare, retail, and finance, they were
able to secure corporate sales of their servers. When it comes to Alibaba and its
synergies, we've found them most notably in Alibaba's own e-commerce
ecosystem, which offers cloud services to other businesses. As the two websites
are fairly comparable, we can see that this is pretty similar to what Amazon
does.

I would like to Thank Singh Krishna sir for this insightful case study assignment, which provided me with a
deep understanding.
