Elimination and Sexuality Critical Thinking Questions:

1. Rectum and Anus assessment

a. The purpose of digital examination is: to palpate solid stool in the rectum and used as a
diagnostic approach to assess the status of the male prostate gland.
2. Describe the following characteristics of normal urine:
a. Color - Straw, amber
b. Clarity - transparent
c. Odor - Faint aromatic

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 1183). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.

c. Sterile - Sterile urine specimens can be obtained from closed drainage systems by
inserting a sterile needle attached to a syringe through a drainage port in the tubing.

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 735). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
d. Timed urine - Some urine examinations require collection of all urine produced and
voided over a specific period of time, ranging from 1 to 2 hours to 24 hours.

Berman Audrey. Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing (2-downloads) (Fundamentals

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 734). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
4. Common urine tests include the following. Briefly explain each:
a. Urinalysis - To determine urine composition and possible abnormal components (e.g.,
protein or glucose) or infection

Berman Audrey. Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing (2-downloads) (Fundamentals

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 869). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
b. Specific Gravity - Specific gravity is an indicator of urine concentration, or the number of
solutes (metabolic wastes and electrolytes) present in the urine.

Berman Audrey. Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing (2-downloads) (Fundamentals

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 735). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
c. Urine Culture - urine culture is ordered to identify microorganisms causing a urinary

of Nursing (Kozier)) (p. 732). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
5. List factors that affect elimination to be included in a nursing history for patients with altered
elimination status: Developmental, Psychosocial, Fluid and Food Intake, Medications, Muscle
Tone, Pathologic Conditions, Surgical and Diagnostic Procedures

Nursing (Kozier)) (pp. 1176-1179). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.
6. Describe the normal fecal characteristics
a. Color - brown

c. Consistency - Formed, soft, semisolid, moist
d. Frequency - Daily
e. Amount - Varies with diet (about 100–400 g/day)

7. Define fecal occult blood testing (FOBT)

Fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) is the most frequently performed fecal analysis. There are two types of
FOBT: the traditional guaiac smear (Hemoccult) and the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). A commonly
used test product to measure occult blood is the Hemoccult test, which uses a chemical reagent
(substance used in a chemical reaction to detect a specific substance). This reagent detects the presence
of the enzyme peroxidase in the hemoglobin molecule.
