What are the factors that made this project a success? How was it a factor?
Successful Health Teaching for Elementary Students, particularly in the domains of proper
Handwashing and Nutrition, encompassed several factors that contributed to effective learning
and behavior change. Here are some of the key factors that were considered by the Nursing
Students of Fatima during their health teaching: Initially, We engaged in a conversation with the
barangay healthcare workers. Subsequently, We obtained informed consent to ascertain if we
could proceed with health teaching. Following this, the barangay captain initiated discussions with
the school principals to secure approval for the teaching, which the principals, along with the
elementary school teachers, granted. We utilized age-appropriate language, visuals, and activities
to ensure that the information was both engaging and easy to understand. Within the classroom
discussions, we established clear learning objectives for the health education lessons, making it
explicit what students should comprehend and be capable of doing following the instruction. For
instance, this encompassed grasping the significance of handwashing and making wise choices
regarding their food. We actively involved the elementary students in hands-on and interactive
activities, which might entail practical demonstrations for handwashing and engaging students in
tasks related to food preparation, taste testing, and meal planning for nutrition. Additionally,
during our focused group discussions, we made use of visual aids like posters, videos, and charts to
strengthen fundamental concepts. These visual tools were effective in aiding students' recollection
of handwashing steps and in helping them understand the different food groups within a balanced
diet.
The nursing students incorporated stories, anecdotes, and real-life examples to make the
topics relatable and memorable. They shared stories about the consequences of not washing hands
or the benefits of a balanced diet. The importance of handwashing and proper nutrition was
consistently reinforced. If they returned or visited the barangay again, these topics were evaluated
to ensure that the information was retained and applied. After the health teaching, they provided
food items as rewards to praise and incentivize students who demonstrated good handwashing and
nutrition practices. Positive reinforcement motivated students to embrace healthy habits. The
parents and guardians of the students were encouraged to support the lessons at home, with
information and assignments involving families, such as meal planning or handwashing challenges.
Health education was incorporated into the school's curriculum and became a regular part of the
students' learning experience. This ensured that health topics received the attention they deserved
and were not treated as one-time events. We engaged with the educators to establish a classroom
setting that fostered health and cleanliness. This included ensuring the availability of adequate
handwashing facilities and opportunities for physical activities. Following students' meals, we
assessed their understanding and abilities regarding handwashing and nutrition. We offered
constructive feedback and tailored guidance for improvement. Most significantly, we collaborated
with teachers, parents, and barangay healthcare workers to provide additional resources and
expertise. They were able to offer valuable insights and organize health-oriented workshops to
emphasize the significance of maintaining good health practices.
