Hichki:A Reaction Paper

In the film “Hichki,” Naina Mathur—a woman with Tourette syndrome—wants

to be a teacher. Tourette syndrome is a neurobehavioral disorder that occurs

because of dysfunction in the areas of the brain involved in movement and behavior

—basal ganglia, cerebral cortex, and thalamus. It cannot be cured, but it can be

controlled.Despite having the said disorder, it did not hinder her from being

passionate, enthusiastic, and devoted as a teacher. But there is just one problem: her

rare disorder is accompanied by an involuntary vocal tic in which she regularly

produces a loud noise like two hiccups in a row, which would make her an easy

target for mockery, especially in a classroom full of youths. She helps her students to

realize their mistakes and enhance their hidden talents.

The moment I saw how she was being mocked and being a laughing stock, it

left a big impact in my heart. Possessing well-built confidence is the reason why she

radiates from within. The film shows that being flawed cannot stop you from reaching

what you truly desire. Even if she has a speech defect, she strives to be an efficient

teacher, and I learned that there is no bad student but a bad teacher.

The film is all about love, acceptance, and reverence between teachers and

students. It is a story about how a diseased person turned her weakness into her

biggest strength, and most importantly, it conveys how compassionate a teacher can

be; she molded her rebellious students to become academic achievers.
