INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO FACTORS –
Two factors are said to interact if the effect of one
factor changes as the level of the other factor
changes.
Suppose we are going to start an experiment with two
factors A and B. Both the factors have 2 levels. For A
(𝑎1 , 𝑎2 ) And for B (𝑏1 , 𝑏2 )

Interaction is Present.
That’s an example of
Significant interaction
Interaction is absent.
That’s an example of non-
significant interaction
POINTS TO BE NOTED –
1. An interaction effect between two factors can be measured
only if the two factors are tested together in the same
experiment (i.e., in a factorial experiment).
2. When interaction is absent the simple effect of a factor is
the same for all levels of the other factors and equals the
main effect.
3. When interaction is present the simple effect of a factor
changes as the level of the other factor changes.

Definition:
An experiment in which the treatments consist of all
possible combinations of the selected levels in two or
more factors is referred to as a factorial experiment.
Drawback Example: Same used in previous
❑Avoid indiscriminate use of factorial experiments because
of their large size, complexity, and cost.
❑large experiment would mean difficulties in financing, in
obtaining an adequate experimental area, in controlling

soil heterogeneity, and so on. Chapter No. 3

Through the factorial experiments, we can study
- the individual effect of each factor and
- interaction effect.
