Syllabus for GED – 301: Basic Statistics and Probability

1. Definition:
Statistics, Importance of statistics, Scope of Statistics, Limitation of statistics, Data
Type: Primary Data, Secondary Data. Variable Type: Discrete Variable, Continuous
variable. Level of measurements and their comparison (With example).

2. Representation of data: Frequency distribution and diagram.

Topics: Frequency distribution, Relative and percentage distribution, More than

type/Less than type cumulative distribution.
Diagram: Bar chart (all types), Pie chart, Pareto Diagram
Histogram, Frequency Polygon, Ogive Curve.

Problems (of this given type may appear):

(Frequency distribution)
Nurul Hasan: Chapter 2 (18, 22, 24)
K C Bhuiyan: Page 50: 16 (Road accident problem), 18 (Weight of Fish)
(Diagrams)
K C Bhuiyan: Ex: 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.12,2.13, 2.15, 2.19
Nurul Hasan: Ex: 2.11, 2.12, 2.13, 2.18, 2.19, 2.27, 2.28, 2.32, 2.33

3. Arithmetic Mean (Combined mean, Weighted Mean), Geometric Mean:

i. Properties:
• Arithmetic Mean is dependent both on origin and scale of measurement
• The algebraic sum of the deviations of the values 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , … … … , 𝑥𝑛 from their
arithmetic mean 𝑥̅ is zero.
• Mean Squared deviation is less than the sum of squared deviation from any
other value
• If 𝑥 = 𝑎 ± 𝑏𝑦 then 𝑥̅ = 𝑎 ± 𝑏𝑦̅.

ii. Mathematical Problems:

K C Bhuiyan: Ex - 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.8, 3.9
Nurul Hasan: Ex – 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.10, 3.11, 3.14, 3.15, 3.16
