ABSTRACT

Fabric waste recycling is a pivotal element in advancing the textile industry towards a circular
economy. Its importance arises from the dual drivers of resource recovery and the environmental
harm associated with fabric disposal in landfills. With a growing imperative for sustainability and
circularity in textiles, the demand for fabric waste recycling is on the rise.

Despite this demand, a comprehensive overview of fabric waste recycling has been lacking. To
address this gap, a recent paper has undertaken a literature review, offering a holistic perspective.
The paper delves into the current state of fabric waste recycling technologies, shedding light on the
methods employed to reclaim valuable materials from discarded textiles.

Moreover, the paper explores emerging trends in fabric recycling applications. These trends
encompass innovative approaches to repurpose fabric waste, such as upcycling into new products or
converting it into raw materials for the textile industry.

The paper doesn't shy away from acknowledging the challenges in fabric waste recycling, which
range from technological limitations to economic considerations. These challenges underscore the
need for continued research and development in this field. In essence, this project acts as a guiding
beacon, consolidating knowledge, and facilitating progress towards a more sustainable and circular
textile industry.

authentication.

1.5 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Fashion waste is a major environmental issue. The fashion industry is responsible for a large fraction
of global greenhouse gas emissions and textile waste piling up in landfills.

Consumers often throw away clothing that is still in good condition contributing to this problem.
While government and several fashion brands have put tangible efforts, it does not seem to have
solved the problem.

In today’s world of increasing cost of living and expensive fabrics being sold in the marketplace,
our website exists to provide the recycled fabrics at a cheaper and reasonable rate. Several
challenges and unmet needs prompt the creation of this platform:

1. Scalability and Performance: As the website's popularity grows, ensuring that it can handle
increased traffic without compromising performance is essential to provide a smooth user
experience.

2. Fabric Diversity: Embracing and creating out of various types of fabrics is a challenge. The
platform must be inclusive.

13
3. Business Viability: Ensuring the website's sustainability through revenue generation,
whether through advertising, premium features, or partnerships, is a central concern for its
creators.

1.6 OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK

The objective of developing this fabric waste management website can be summarised as follows:

1. User-Friendly Experience: Design an intuitive and user-friendly interface that caters to a

wide range of user needs.

2. Cross-Device Accessibility: Ensure the platform is responsive and accessible on various

devices, including smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.

3. Cheaper and efficient: This platform ensures that all our materials will be easily accessible to
all communities of people.

4. Upcycling: This is the process of taking something old or unwanted and transforming it into
something useful.

5. Reduce waste: Our project aims to reduce the amount of textile waste that accumulates in
landfills and minimize energy-intensive processes associated with creating new textiles by
upcycling old clothing items.

CHAPTER 2:
15
LITERATURE SURVEY

2.1: INTRODUCTION
Fabric waste recycling is one of the key aspects to consider in moving towards circular economy in
textiles. The demand for fabric waste recycling is primarily driven by the resource recovery
perspective and the detrimental environmental impact of disposal and landfilling.
Despite the strong desire and demand for circularity in textiles, a holistic view of fabric waste
recycling has not yet been presented. To fill this gap, this paper synthesises the literature that
pertains on fabric waste recycling. In particular, the current state of fabric waste recycling
technologies, emerging trends in fabric recycling applications, and associated challenges were
discussed. Results demonstrate the lack of effort towards fabric-to-fabric recycling and recycling of
fibre blends.

2.2: CORE AREA OF THE PROJECT

The core area of the fabric waste management revolves around following key aspects:
1. Fabric management- Separate storage areas of various fabrics. We will also manage them
according to seasons so that they don’t get damaged.

2. Recycling process- After our fabrics are sorted, we will recycle them by making rugs, carpets,
mats etc. useful items . The clothes in good condition would be donated according to needs of
people.

3. Selling criteria- All people who would donate the clothes to us to recycle will be given special
discount coupons so that they are motivated to give us more clothes for our usage. We will also
put a credit of mimimum 5% on clothes sold.

4. Compost unusable clothes- The best part is that we wont be letting any piece of cloth going to
the dustbin. Compost would be formed of fabrics like silk, wool, cashmere, hemp and linen clothing.

CHAPTER 3: SYSTEM ANALYSIS

19
3.1INTRODUCTION

In this project, we have successfully implemented waste management website involving

different types of fabrics. A system of upcycling and reusing fabrics is the main motto of our
project.

3.2DISADVANTAGES / LIMITATIONS IN THE EXISTING SYSTEM

1. Most of India’s textile waste is disposed in landfills, with only small percentage being
recycled or reused.

2. The country produces approximately 16.3 million tonnes of textile waste each year, with
only around 20% of this waste being recycled or reused. The rest is either sent to
landfills where it contributes to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions or
disposed of through burning or dumping in water bodies.

3. Consumers mostly throw away old clothes, so in this way they do not bet the opportunity
of recycling.

3.3 PROPOSED SYSTEM

3.3.1: Upcycling- Upcycling is the process of taking something old or unwanted and
transforming it into something new and useful.
3.3.2: In the context of fashion, upcycling typically involve es taking old cloth items
and using them to create fresh garments.
3.3.3: This also gives us a great market opportunity- the fashion market is growing
rapidly with consumera increasingly interested in environmentally friendly products.
According to 2021 survey, 72% of gen z consumers reported that they are willing to pay
more for sustainable, eco friendly products, indicating a significant market opportunity.

20
3.4: SUMMARY

Addressing the need for a comprehensive solution to fabric waste recycling is essential for
transitioning to a circular economy in textiles. This demand arises from the urgent necessity to
recover valuable resources and mitigate the environmental harm caused by fabric disposal and
landfilling. Despite a growing desire for circularity in the textile industry, a holistic perspective on
fabric waste recycling is notably absent.

The current state of fabric waste recycling technologies is diverse, encompassing mechanical,
chemical, and biological processes, each with its own advantages and limitations. Emerging trends in
fabric recycling applications include the upcycling of discarded textiles into new products, such as
fashion items and industrial materials, as well as innovative approaches like textile-to-textile
recycling, which involves converting old fabrics into new ones.

However, numerous challenges persist, hindering the progress of fabric waste recycling. These
challenges include technology scalability, cost-effectiveness, and the need for better collection and
sorting systems. Establishing a complete chain for fabric waste recycling that addresses these
challenges, from collection and processing to the development of sustainable end products, is crucial
for the industry's circular transformation. It requires collaboration between textile manufacturers,
recyclers, policymakers, and consumers to create a sustainable, closed-loop system that maximizes
resource recovery, minimizes waste, and reduces the textile industry's environmental footprint
