Reported speech

There are two kinds of speech: direct speech – what someone says when they speak and
reported speech – when we talk about what they said afterwards.

“I’m really into Diego.” - Peter > Peter said (that) he was really into Diego.

[present simple > past simple]

“I dumped Peter.” - Diego > Diego said (that) he had dumped Peter.

[past simple > past perfect]

Reported speech is usually a tense behind the direct speech (see table).

We use said or told with reported speech:

“I’m sorry.” > She said (that) she was sorry. // She told me (that) she was sorry.
