A. The new job is not only different; it’s better-paid, more interesting and naturally involves longer working
hours. The job is Head of Research and Development and is exciting because it means finding and making
new products, then testing them and developing them. It sounds wonderful, but there is a small problem. We
live in London now and the new job is in Barcelona.
B. Yesterday, Jorge came home from work and told me he got the job. We talked for a long time. This is what
we agreed. He’s taking the job. We are moving to Spain! The salary for the new job is so big that I don’t have
to work. I can spend my time having Spanish lessons in a local college until I feel ready to work. Barcelona
also has restaurants and cinemas and, of course, it’s by the sea. Flights to and from London are not very
expensive and our friends can come and visit us. We are moving next month and now I’m as excited as Jorge
is.
C. I love living in London. We have a fantastic social life: we often go out to cinemas, restaurants, art
galleries and of course most of our friends are here, too. My job is here. I work in a busy travel agent and I
love it. I know that Barcelona is a nice city, but I will really miss our life here if we move there.
D. Another possible problem is that I don’t speak much Spanish. Jorge, who was born in Argentina, speaks it
as his first language. That’s one of the reasons the company want him for the job. I don’t think Spanish is
difficult to learn, but it’s scary to think of going to a place where you can’t speak the language.
E. Last week my husband, Jorge, had an important job interview. He already has a job in a large international
company, where he’s a sales manager. He’s not unhappy with what he’s doing at the moment, but recently the
head of the European Office asked him if he was interested in doing something different.
