PROBLEM 1 (20pts)
Nitrogen enters a turbine operating at steady state at 450 K, 25 bar, with a mass flow rate of
7.5 kg/s, and exits at 290 K, 6 bar. The velocities at the inlet and exit are 18 m/s and 32 m/s,
respectively. Assume the gas can be modeled as ideal, and potential energy effects can be
neglected. If the power developed is 815 kW:
a) Sketch the system, boundary and define all assumptions for the analysis (4%)
b) Determine the rate of heat transfer, in kW, for a control volume enclosing the turbine
(4%)
c) Determine the change in the specific internal energy of the system (4%)
d) Calculate the inlet and exit cross areas of the turbine (4%)
e) Estimate the mass fluxes at the inlet and exit (4%)
PROBLEM 2 (30pts)
A pump is drawing 1 kg/s of liquid propyl alcohol at steady state conditions from a large
vessel A at 30°C and 1.5 bar and delivering it at a pressure of 6.5 bar to a closed storage
tank B located at 18 m above the vessel A. The power input to the pump is 806.7 W.
Assumes, the propyl alcohol temperature remains nearly constant and there is not
significant change in kinetic energy from inlet to exit.
a) Sketch the system, boundary and define all assumptions for the analysis (4%)
b) Determine the change in the specific enthalpy and internal energy for the system (both
in kJ/kg) by using the assumptions of the incompressible substance model. If required,

use knovel database (or a different source) to find models for specific heat capacity and
density. (6%)
c) Determine the change in the specific enthalpy and internal energy for the system (both
in kJ/kg) by using the saturation data approximation. If the substance is not available in
the guide book, search for other references or in ultimate you can use the software
Thermonator/Termograf. Reference the sources if other thermodynamic tables were
used. (6%)
d) Determine the heat flow rate of alcohol in the boundary of the system, in kW for the
incompressible substance model and the saturation data approximation. Explain if there
are differences and which one would you select as more accurate result? (6%)
e) What would be the heat flow rate (for both incompressible substance model and
saturation data approximation) if the storage tank is opened to the atmosphere? (8%)

PROBLEM 3 (20pts)
Hot industrial hexane at 15 bar, 180°C with a mass flow rate of 5 kg/s enters a flash
chamber via a valve. Saturated vapor and saturated liquid streams, each at 4 bar, exit the
flash chamber. The saturated vapor enters the turbine and expands to 0.85 bar and 88.25 °C.
Stray heat transfer and kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible.

a) For operation at steady state, determine the power (in hp and kW) developed by the
turbine. (10%)
b) Draw and analyze the T-v and P-v diagrams of the process or processes using
termograf/Thermonator. (10%)
PROBLEM 4 (30pts)
A compressor rapidly fills a rigid tank with air drawn from the atmosphere at 25°C, 0.85
bar and a constant mass flow rate. The tank initially contains air at 25°C, 1 barg (gauge)
and has a cylindrical geometry with internal diameter D = 50 cm, cylindrical length L = 140
cm and two elliptical heads of length D/4. Assumes the air from the atmosphere is first
compressed at 3 bar, in a compressor that operates at steady state, in a polytropic process
with a polytropic index n = 1.12. The electrical DC-motor with an efficiency η = 85%
provides a current i = 3 A, differential potential Ꜫ = 220 V, and is coupled to the
compressor. The efficiency is defined as η = shaft power/electrical input power; and the
ideal gas model applies for the air. If heat interactions with surrounding, kinetic and
potential energy effects are all negligible:
a) Define all the subsystems in the figure, describe them and include all the assumptions
that can be made for each subsystem. (4%)
b) Calculate the shaft power produced by the electrical DC-motor, in kW. (4%)
