Jinn and the

World of the Unseen
Why were they created?
Jinn are not make-believe ghosts or monsters, these things do not exist.
Jinn on the other hand, are real and they are creatures made by Allah.
Although sometimes it can be scary to talk about something we cannot
see, it is important to know about them.

Like humans, Jinn are able to

choose to obey Allah or not. Some Allah
Jinn are good Muslims, but most made t

fire;
"And We created the Jinn before that

{Quran 15:26-27}
Can they see us?
The world of the Jinn is
mixed with ours, yet it is
also completely separate.
Jinn can see us, but Allah has
not allowed us to see them.
Allah says "Verily he [Shaytaan]
and his qabeeluhu [his soldiers from the
jinn or his tribe] see you from where you
cannot see them."
{Qur'an 7:27}

Where do they live?

The Jinn live in abandoned or dirty
places such as the bathroom, a
garbage site and graveyards. That is
why we must seek refuge in Allah
before we enter such places.

What do they eat?
The Jinn eat the bones from the animals that humans have eaten. A
Muslim Jinn once asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
what He could eat. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said

"For you is every bone on which Allah's

Name was recited. It will fall in your hands
filled with meat.”
{Sahīh Muslim}

Do they have special powers?

The Jinn are able to do things that Allah has not given the
ability for humans to do. Allah has told us that the Jinn are
super fast and strong. In the story of Prophet Sulayman, peace
be upon him, we hear about a very fast and strong Jinn who
said that he could bring the throne of the Queen of Yemen with
super fast speed:

"An ifreet (strong one) from the Jinns said: I will bring it
[her throne] to you before you rise from your place. And
verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work.
One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: I will
bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye! Then when
Sulayman saw it placed before him, he said, This is by the
Grace of my Lord."
{Qur'an 27:39-40}
The Jinn are of 3 types

Seeking protection from Jinn

As we cannot see them and a lot of Jinn are not Muslim,
mischievous and evil creatures, we need to seek Allah's
protection from them so as to be safe from their harmful
ways and there are several ways we can do this:

Seeking refuge with Allah

“And if an evil whisper comes to you from shaytaan, then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearer,
All-Knower” {Qur'an 7:200} "A’oodhu Billahi min al-Shaytan il-rajeem" (I seek refuge with Allah from the
accursed shaytan)

Reciting al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas)

“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of be upon him, used to seek refuge with Allah from the
jinn and from the evil eye until the Mu’awwidhatayn were revealed, and when they were revealed he
started to recite them and not anything else.”

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi

A shaytan once taught the sahabi, Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him the following, "He
taught me to recite ayat al-Kursiy when I go to bed, and said that no shaytan would come near me until
morning, and that Allah would appoint a guard for me who would stay with me. {Bukhari}

Reciting the last verse of Surah Baqarah

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said “Allah inscribed a book two thousand years before
He created the heavens and the earth, from which the last two ayahs of Surat al-Baqarah were revealed.
If they are recited for three nights, no shaytan (devil) will remain in the house”. {Tirmidhi}

Reciting 100x
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
said: “Whoever says “La ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli
shayin qadeer” one hundred times in the day, will have a reward equivalent to that of freeing ten slaves, one
hundred hasanahs (good deeds) will be recorded for him, and one hundred sayiahs (bad deeds) will be
erased from his record, and it will be protection for him from the shaytan for that day, until evening comes.
No one could achieve any better than him except the one who does more than he did.” {Bukhari and Muslim}
