INTRODUCTION

A teaching demonstration about “Exploring Phlebotomy Techniques: Understanding

Blood Collection n Medical Laboratory Science” was done at Lucban Academy last May 4,

2024, as a final requirement for the course Principles and Strategies of teaching in Health

Education (PSTHE). Phoemela Gwyn O. Ronquillo and Zhara Allea Jamilano of BSMT-2A

taught Grade 12 STEM students the function, techniques and tools used in venipuncture.

This narrative report consists of the introduction, testimonial of student and teacher,

evaluation of the presenters, documentation, and reflection regarding their experiences in

teaching.

The teaching demonstration serves as the application of the lessons studied

throughout the semester consisting of teaching techniques, methods, evaluation,

writing objectives and roles of a teacher. The objectives of the teaching demonstration

are to familiarize Grade 12-STEM students with the fundamental principles of

phlebotomy, including equipment usage, procedural steps, safety protocols, and the

significance of accurate blood collection in medical laboratory practice and related

career opportunities. Live instruction that combines lectures and practical

demonstrations to provide students with the basics conceptual information and skills

they need in the laboratory. Live demonstrations by instructors show proper

venipuncture procedures, how to use equipment, and how to use it properly. Through

controlled and supervised settings, demonstrations give students the opportunity to

watch step-by-step procedures. Venipuncture-related procedural standards, and

safety precautions are covered in classes by instructors. Lectures equip students with

the fundamental knowledge required to understand venipuncture technique, the

process behind phlebotomy techniques, and the correct handling of blood specimens.

REFLECTION

Phoemela Gwyn O. Ronquillo:

Teaching these students made me realize that teaching truly takes patience and

passion. Getting the students’ attention isn’t an easy task and so is keeping your voice

modulated all throughout the discussion. However, this experience made me realize

that our professors really put in a lot of effort for us (students) to learn the lessons they

aim to teach. I was kind of nervous although my partner and I practiced and prepared

everything that we will be needing including the power point presentation and

phlebotomy kit in advance, since talking in front of many people is not something I'm

confident at. On top of that, it was also my first-time sharing knowledge about my field,

which is Medical Technology, and also the fact that we will be teaching grade 12

students.

Before saying goodbye to the students, we had a little recap of our discussion.

We also thanked them for giving us their time. Our teaching demo wouldn't be

possible without their cooperation. We received positive feedback from both the

students and the teacher in charge saying we did good and that they enjoyed a lot and

are happy for learning something new. Overall, I can say that our teaching

demonstration is successful!

REFLECTION

Zhara Allea S, Jamilano:

During our teaching demonstration, I could say that I executed and explained

my part well to the students. While discussing, I make sure that they can follow and

understand what I'm discussing by talking clearly and demonstrating what's on our

presentation. For instance, while I was teaching them about the different kinds of

needles that we use for blood extraction, I show it to them and explain how and when

to use it. It actually made me happy seeing them listening carefully and looking

interested about what we do on our course. They were also very participative during

our discussion. After our teaching demonstration, it made me realized that teaching

encompasses more than just cognitive and informational domains, it also reaches the

transforming emotive level. Teaching is a difficult profession, despite what many

people may believe. Being a teacher means more than just having a solid

understanding of the subject matter; it also means being open to continuous personal

growth, updating teaching aids and materials, and repeatedly considering and

evaluating the most effective ways to impart knowledge and encourage students to go

beyond what they have already learned. I never thought of becoming a professor once

I graduate from college and teach subjects related to my profession just like histology,

parasitology, MTLE, and so on since I never like teaching because studying for myself

is already hard for me and teaching is another thing. But still, I'm grateful for this

opportunity that made me experience how it feels like to share knowledge to other

people. It also helped me overcome my fear of talking in front of many.

TESTIMONIES

Testimony of Student/s:
(1) Before moving on to actual reporting or discussion of the topic, they
entertain us with games, which ensures that we are awake and alert
before the beginning of the lesson. This is one of the effectiveness of their
instructional tactics. They are ready to demonstrate the injection tools to
us in the real world, and I observed a lesson plan that was really well
arranged. An explanation that was both clear and easy to comprehend
was provided regarding the many types of injections, including the one in
which the blood is placed. They decide to inject the young man with a
syringe instead of the enormous green one because he is initially reluctant
to have the injection. As a result of this, he is willing to inject the enormous
green one by urging himself to do so and demonstrating himself to us. It is
extremely grateful that they have taken the time to educate us and share
their expertise with us in relation to the program and injections. During the
demonstration, they displayed an astounding level of knowledge, and they
are enthusiastic about serving as a source of education for other people.

(2) The teachers had a good understanding of their topic and did their best to
explain the topic. They added a twist of humor and showed us how to do
the lesson which we appreciate. My only suggestion is that next time they
also allow the students to be able to participate in blood collection.

Testimony of Teacher/Evaluator:

For Miss Zhara Jamilano: She’s good in explaining. She knows her craft well.

Although there was a spill of blood after the puncture, it was well demonstrated.

For Miss Phoemela Ronquillo: She explained well. She complimented her partner

well, filling the gaps to make the presentation better and makes the discussion more

engaging for the students.
