Decomposition of metal carbonate

When metal carbonates are heated, they decompose into metal oxide and carbon dioxide.

Metal carbonate metal oxide + carbon dioxide

Metal carbonates like calcium carbonate, zinc carbonate will get decompose to its oxide
and release carbon dioxide gas on heating.

Exceptions:

Sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate will not decompose on heating. Since these
metals are highly reactive and forms stable compounds.

1. Complete the following word equations

(a) calcium carbonate …………………………………….. + …………………………..

(b) zinc carbonate ……………………………….……… + ……………………………

2. Complete the following symbol equations

(a) MgCO3 …………………………….. + …………………………..

(b) CuCO3 …………………………….. + …………………………..

3. All metal carbonates react with all acids.

Metal carbonate + acid → salt + water + carbon dioxide

Work out the names of the salts from the names of the metal carbonate and the acid.

a) calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid → ………………………. + water + carbon dioxide

b) zinc carbonate + sulfuric acid →………………………………….. + water + carbon dioxide

c) magnesium carbonate + nitric acid →……………………………. + water + carbon dioxide
