CZI

MEMBERSHIP
STRUCTURE
REVIEW
3 MAY 2024
Background
A CZI transformation strategy is focusing on 4 pillars of
transformation namely:

• Membership Review
• Economic analysis and industry agenda
• Governance review and new services
• Regulations mapping and related services

Among the key objectives is the need to re-confederate

CZI to strengthen the institution and reposition it for
legitimacy, credibility, relevance and influence as stated
in the transformation strategy as well as establish inclusive
membership and governance structures that mirror and serve
the constituency structure of the membership.

These were a result of a process of both self-

assessment and technical assistance on
institutional transformation. The opportunities
were presented as:
• The pre-existing membership diversity in CZI provides an
opportunity to reorganize the membership structure and
categories, disaggregating member sub-groups by their
differentiating factors.
• The expressed need by existing members for CZI to fully
embrace and formalise its current multi-sectoral identity.
• The emergence of value chains offers CZI an opportunity
to review its confederacy status by considering the current
mix of the profile of industry i.e. value chains, individual
enterprises and industrial associations.
• The prominence of the manufacturing sector of the
emerging multi-sector CZI needs to be taken into
consideration

1
Over the past two years some background work
has been done in the following membership
analysis areas:
• Industries that are in CZI including current industrial
associations, the industrial associations are currently being
formed and the other sub-groups made up of members
outside the industrial associations.
• Analysis of all the individual members to identify their most
appropriate sub-group.
• Analysis of the value chains that have been identified in CZI
against the industry groupings above and the individual
members.
• Analysis of already established value chain associations
against the above industry groupings

Objectives
1. A confederacy of sub sectors which should be brought into
effect by sub sector representation in the national council.
2. Reconfederate CZI to strengthen the institution and
reposition it for legitimacy, credibility, relevance and
influence as a BMO.
3. Establish inclusive membership and governance structures
that mirror and serve the constituency structure of the
membership.

SOME KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR
MEMBERSHIP
MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
CATEGORIES

• Corporate
• Association
• Value Chain

Corporate
• Corporates are individual entities that may join CZI and
these may be small , medium or large enterprises
• Above a certain annual revenue, the corporate is eligible
for national council membership and these may be referred
to as major entities
• Groups of companies should be treated differently from
companies with branches across the country. In a group
of companies, each company should be a member
of the confederation in their own right and paying
separate subscriptions and where there are branches
across the country, the out of town branches can join
CZI in the respective chambers without paying additional
subscriptions but will not be eligible for office bearer positions
but can participate but not lead a standing committee.

Association
• These are industrial associations or other trade or service
sector associations that may wish to join CZI
• Those associations that are already fully functional and
properly constituted will have to meet certain CZI set
minimum governance criteria for them to be members of
CZI and to be members of the national Council
• These will join at Platinum subscription levels

Value Chain
These are value chain associations that are established and
have a clear governance structure and are active like the
Zimbabwe Dairy Industry Trust
