S.R. Ranganathan Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan was an Indian librarian, educator and Mathematician. He was born on August 9 1892 in Sirkali , Tamil Nadu (Then Madras). He was also awarded the Padma shri award, one of the highest civilian honours in the country. Contribution Ranganathan's chief technical contributions to library science were in classification and indexing theory. His Colon Classification (1933) introduced a system that is widely used in research libraries around the world and that has affected the evolution of such older systems as the Dewey Decimal Classification. Why was he called the father of library He was called the father of library because he established the first library science program in India. He further advocated for the use of technology in libraries and spearheaded the movement to professionalize librarianship. Thank you
