INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized traditional business practices, especially in
higher education institutions. However, managing space in academic libraries remains a
challenging task, and seat occupancy issues are recurring problems. The inability to allow
users to reserve a seat for a specified time makes it a difficult and time-consuming
process for students and staff as claimed by Maepa and Moeti (2021). The growing
interest in IoT technologies and IoT-based systems has led to an increasing demand for
technical solutions that can simplify this process and offer a clever solution to these
problems. Through interviews with the University Librarian and the BLIS Department Head,
this study identified several existing problems in the BulSU E-Library, such as the lack of a
system to detect seat-occupancy availability and traditional manual processes that
cause inconvenience for both staff and students. Researchers have discovered that the
integration of a seat management system can improve the traditional way into a smart
system that provides users with rapid and comfortable service. To support the feasibility
of the system, a successful solution has been demonstrated to be the integration of IoT-
based technology with web applications, which enables remote verification of library seat
occupancy status and identity verification of occupants.
GENERAL

The main objective of this study is to
design and develop a seat-
occupancy and reservation (SOAR)

SCOPE OF THE STUDY
SCOPE
Develop SOAR: a seat-occupancy and reservation system using RFID
technology and 3D visualization for BulSU E-Library.
The system will be developed to address the issue of seat-occupancy
detection and monitoring in the library using RFID-based sensors.
The system will incorporate 3D modeling for reservations to offer a
more effective and user-friendly method of making reservations for
seats real-time.
The seat-occupancy detection and tracking system will be connected
to the reservation system to ensure reservations are made only for
available seats.
The system will implement an automated notification system to alert
students when their reserved seats are about to expire or become
unavailable.
The system aims to minimize seat reservation conflicts, improve
overall library resource management, and provide a more convenient
and efficient way for students and staff to access library resources.
LIMITATIONSOF THE STUDY
LIMITATIONS
The system is limited to the 6th floor of the e-library.
The system can be expanded to cover further floors in the future
based on demand and resource availability.
The system is exclusive only for BulSU students and does not include
guests in the database.
Guests must manually go to the information desk to be
accommodated.
The system does not include the existing features of the library's
website.
The system is designed to work independently and may not be
integrated with other features such as the online public access
catalog, digital resources, and other search tools.
The system requires a stable power supply and network connectivity
to function properly.
Measures can be put in place to address this limitation, such as
having backup power and network connectivity options in case of
outages.

DESIGN OF SOFTWARE, SYSTEMS,
PRODUCT, AND/OR PROCESSES
Planning, research, prototyping, testing,
and execution are just a few of the steps
that make up the design process. The
objective of design is to produce a
product that is effective, user-friendly,
efficient, and fits the demands of the
target audience. To ensure the success
and quality of software, systems, products,
and/or processes, errors must be
mitigated throughout the design phase.

SAMPLING METHOD
The researchers will use purposive sampling. In this
sampling method, units are chosen "on purpose". It focuses
on the researchers’ judgment when determining and
choosing the people, instances, or events that can supply
the most information to meet the study's goals. Purposive
sampling is common in mixed methods research which is
why it is a great choice sampling for this study.
