Q.1. It is desired to have a 4.13 mWb maximum core flux in a transformer at 110V and 50Hz.
Determine the required number of turns in the primary side.
Ans: 120

Q.2. A 25kVA 1-phase transformer has 250 turns on the primary and 40 turns on the secondary
winding. The primary is connected to 1500V, 50Hz mains. Calculate, primary & secondary
currents on full load, secondary EMF, maximum flux in the core.
Ans: 16.66A, 240V, 27mWb

Q.3. A single phase transformer has a core whose cross sectional area of 150 cm2. It operate at a
maximum flux density of 1.1 Wb/m2 from a 50Hz supply. If the secondary winding has 66 turns,
determine the output in kVA when connected to a load of 4W impedance. Neglect voltage drop in
transformer.
Ans: 14.4kVA

Q.4. A 100kVA, 2400/240V 50Hz 1-phase transformer has an exciting current of 0.64A and a
core loss of 700W, when its high voltage side is energized at rated voltage and frequency.
Calculate the components of no-load current and no-load branch parameters.
Ans: 0.292A, 0.57A, 8.22kW, 4.21kW

Q.5. A 230/460V transformer has a primary resistance of 0.2 W and a reactance of 0.5 W and the
corresponding values for the secondary are 0.75W and 1.8W respectively. Find the secondary
terminal voltage when supplying (a) 10A at 0.8 p.f. lagging (b) 10A at 0.8 p.f. leading. (c)
Calculate the voltage regulation in both cases.
Ans: 424.8V (at lagging) and 470.4V (at leading), 7.6%, -2.2%
Q.6. A 10 kVA, 1-phase transformer with 2000/400V at no load, has resistance and leakage
reactance of primary winding 5.5 W and 12W respectively. The corresponding values of secondary
winding being 0.2W and 0.45W. Determine the value of secondary voltage at full load, 0.8 p.f.
lagging, when the primary applied voltage is 2000V.
Ans: 377.65V
Q.7. A single phase transformer gave following test results: Rating 100kVA, 11 kV/220V, 50Hz
OC Test: 220V, 45A 2kW
SC Test: 500V 9.09A 3kW
Determine the equivalent circuit parameters referred to low voltage side.
Ans: 24.2W, 4.99W, 0.0145W, 0.0165W

Q.8. A transformer rated 200V/50V, 10kVA has a core loss of 100W. What is the maximum
efficiency of the transformer at 0.8 lagging P.F.? Assume full load copper loss as 200W. At what
load this maximum efficiency is obtained?
Ans: 7.07kVA, 96.58%, 97.25%

A.9. A 250V/500V, 1-phase transformer gave the following results,


SC (HV side): 20V 12A 100W
OC (LV side): 250V 1A 80W
Determine the efficiency of transformer when output is 12A, 500 V at 0.85 lagging P.F.
Ans: 96.59%

Q.10. In a 25kVA 1-phase 2000/200V transformer, the iron losses and full load copper losses were
found to be as 200W and 400W respectively. Calculate efficiency at half load and 0.8 P.F.
Determine maximum efficiency and corresponding load.
Ans: 95.087% and 97.78%
