A LOOK AT

MUSCULOSKELETAL
DISORDERS
In 2014, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported
365,580 cases of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs),
sprains and strains due to improper lifting. Workers who
experienced MSD required an average of 13 days to
recover before returning to work.

WHO WAS AFFECTED?

Based on the BLS, MSDs accounted
for 32% of all injury and illness
cases in 2014. Nursing assistants,
freight, stock and material movers
incurred the highest number of
MSD-related cases.

COMMON TYPES OF MSDs

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

Back injury
Arthritis
Tendon pain
Bone pain
Muscle pain

HOW ARE THEY DIAGNOSED?

A physical exam is performed to

test the muscle for any
weakness. Based on the results, an
X-ray, MRI, and/or blood test may
be conducted to diagnose the type
of MSDs.

Work safe, work smart. With an appropriate and

effective ergonomic process, your organization can
help reduce work-related MSDs and maintain a
healthier, safer workplace for employees.
