Prologue
Q ueen Ophelia was gone. And King Allerick wouldn’t rest until
she was found and safely back in the shadow realm. I
wouldn’t rest until she—my queen, and the woman who had made
my oldest friend happy—was safely back in the shadow realm.
The Shades in our realm would revolt if the miracle that was
Queen Ophelia wasn’t returned.
And the key to all of that lay in the woman in front of us. The
Hunter in front of us.
Astrid Bishop was both sister to the beloved Queen of the Shades,
and one of the most fearsome Hunters of her generation. She was
someone Ophelia loved and trusted, and someone my entire realm
hated.
And we were bringing her back there. Into our realm, our safe
space, the only place where we didn’t have to worry about Hunters
stalking our every step in the night.
Coming to her home had been a long shot, but she’d been waiting
for us, ready and willing to help. But we couldn’t communicate here
—in the human realm, Allerick and I were specters. Defenseless,
silent specters. We had to bring her home with us so we could form
a plan, find out where Ophelia was being held and how to get to her,
but it wasn’t without risk.
“I don’t trust her,” I told Allerick, speaking into his mind the way
we could in this form. For all that Astrid looked like her sister, they
were nothing alike in temperament. And I was the Captain of the
Guard, responsible for Allerick’s safety, even moreso when he was
blinded by worry for his wife.
“How surprising. She’s a bigger threat to us here than in our
realm.”
“We could do what Meridia probably did and stop in the in-
between,” I challenged, choking slightly on my traitorous sister’s
name. That she’d been conspiring with the Hunters as one of her
many attempts at Allerick’s throne was distressing, to say the
least.“We still have the visual advantage that way.”
“I won’t put her at such a disadvantage. We can talk right next to
the portal, then immediately return her here.” Allerick was too
honorable. Or perhaps just too in love with his wife. Speaking in the
swirling, disorienting darkness of the in-between would be
frightening for Astrid, but she’d killed who knows how many Shades
in her hunting career, and I wasn’t going to let the king be the next
on that list.
“I want it noted that I don’t like this idea.”
I floated forward, putting myself between Allerick and Astrid, and
gestured for her to turn the lamp off. The shadowy sleeve of my
cloak drifted through the air with the movement, and Astrid
swallowed loudly before flicking the lamp off.
But why didn’t she smell more afraid?
Ophelia broadcast every emotion she felt through her scent, but
Astrid’s was almost non-existent in comparison. There was a faint
whiff of sourness, of something negative, but considering the
circumstances, she should be a lot more frightened.
I moved behind her, invisible to her in the darkness, and wrapped
both arms around her shoulders, ready to restrain her the moment
my form solidified. She shuddered in my grip, able to feel the
sensation of me, albeit lightly. Allerick rested a hand on my shoulder,
guiding us into the in-between and keeping us connected so we
didn’t lose each other in the darkness.
My solid form took hold, as did Allerick’s behind me. In the human
realm, Astrid was the threat, and we were floating targets to the
Hunters who could see us where humans couldn’t.
But here…
Astrid was stiff and uncomfortable against me, the top of her head
barely brushing my shoulder. Small. Fragile, even.
With short, slow legs.
I sensed Allerick’s curiosity as I scooped her up, carrying her in my
arms with more gentleness than she deserved.
It was only because I could discreetly pat her down for weapons
this way, I told myself. If she had silver daggers strapped to her
thighs, I’d be able to feel them.
“I can walk,” Astrid hissed.
“Aren’t you clever?” I murmured, hoping my voice didn’t carry.
Hoping Allerick hadn’t caught such a moment of undignified
immaturity, though he was right behind me.
Get it together, I told myself. She’s dangerous, and awful, up to
her eyeballs in dead Shades. And she’s the best hope we have of
finding Ophelia.
Astrid grew even more rigid as we exited the portal into the shade
realm. If she wasn’t who she was, I might feel sorry for her. My grip
tightened infinitesimally, the idea of letting her run rampant in this
realm setting off every warning instinct I had.
“You can put me down now,” Astrid gritted out, looking up at me
with wide, alarmed eyes. Probably at how tightly I was holding onto
her.
But she still didn’t smell afraid, and if she wasn’t afraid, it was
because she didn’t need to be. Because she was entirely confident in
her own abilities, in her strength, in her cunning.
I lowered her slowly to the ground, not taking my eyes off her for
a second as I stepped away.
Astrid Bishop was wildly dangerous, an unprecedented threat that
this realm had never seen before, and I dearly hoped we’d never see
again.
We’d get the information we needed, send her back to the human
realm, and get the queen back.
And I’d ask Ophelia very politely to sever her relationship with her
poisonous sister.
Chapter 1
