BUILD YOUR PERSONAL CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

Instructions: Review the prompts under Week 6: Build your Personal Climate Action Plan to complete the following.

Step 1: Reflection

Out of all the four themes in the course I found the theme on energy the most compelling, this is the theme I will be focussing on. I
found it compelling because there are actionable changes that I can take in my own life that will have a positive impact. This theme
spent some time talking about an individual changing the way his or her immediate friends or colleagues view climate change. This
struck me, as at times the issue of climate change can feel overwhelming and such a massive issue that an individual can’t make a
difference. Breaking the actions down and talking about how important individual action and peer persuasion are, really helped me
digest the issue of climate change and come up with actions I can take in my immediate community to drive change.
Step 2: Visioning

 Installing new windows

 Installing Solar panels
 Making sure light bulbs are energy efficient
 Using technology to track in home energy consumptions
 Installing a new boilers

When thinking about my community I am thinking of my immediate friends and family. All of the above actions could be taken by
my community and would go a small way to helping. Once my friends and family make these changes, their friends and their family
are likely to follow suit.

When thinking in a broader sense of community. There are changes I would want the city I live in to make.

 Transport - There are a lot of cars going through Southampton England. Most driving in to the city centre to go shopping or
catch a Ferry to the Isle of Wight. This means Southampton City centre is a red zone for pollution. On top of this Southampton
has one of the highest numbers of traffic lights per square metre in the country. Meaning cars are constantly stopping and
starting. I would like to see Southampton install more cycle paths and public transport facilities (Buses in the city are expensive
and unreliable). I would like them to set areas of the city centre as car free zones. Instead installing park and rides.

 Recycling - Recycling isn’t easy in Southampton. To do so you need to go to designated recycling zones. Which is all well and
good, except there’s only 2 and at times it can take hours to get in to them. They al so don’t cater to people wanting to recycle
that don’t drive. I would like them to re-build the current bin collection and recycling service. Making it as convenient as
possible by providing specialised bins that residents fill to then be taken away by the council. Many other parts of the country
have had this service for years now.

 Energy - There are many buildings in Southampton that you could install Green roofs and Solar panels on. Most of the city
centre is geared towards shopping, education or eating out. Most of these building have enough surface area for such
installations. There are al so a lot of new builds that would benefit from such installations. Southampton is a developing city,
now is the best time to drive sustainable change in the city.
Step 3: Individual Assets

Skills;

 Change management
 Impact analysis
 People management
 People persuasion
 Computer coding/Games development/Software development/Website development
 Data analysis

Resources;
 Time - Outside of my usual working hours I have a considerable amount of time to spend.
 Space - I have enough space in my flat to host meetings
 Technology/Access to the internet - Access to the internet allows sharing of information and organisation of people in to
social groups. Social media can be utilised to create networks and gather people together to drive action in the community.
 Personal relationship with head of Sustainable sourcing for Kingfisher PLC.
Step 4: Community Assets

 tec - The Environment centre. This Is a Southampton based organisation. Its purpose is to reduce carbon emissions, encourage
sustainability, improve air quality and help people to keep warm and well in their homes.

They have a current project called Southampton healthy homes.

They are providing advise to residents on;

 Accessing funding for home energy upgrades, such as heating improvements, insulation and draught proofing
 Support with benefits checks, budgeting and debt
 Switching energy tariff or supplier
 Tackling condensation and mould
 Healthier living

I was only able to find this one organisation that has a focus on energy in Southampton. Most of the other organisations are
focused on the quality of the air.

To help this organisation I can use some of my free time to volunteer with the support they provide over a phone service. The organisation
also spends time in schools, giving educational talks and workshops. I could help with these as I have experience talking in front of large
crowds.
