It s also a great PDF vie er ith full support for macOS s built-in Markup

That s the magic of the Quart filters built into macOS. For e ample, a
Quart filter can be used to convert a color PDF document to a beautiful
black and hite version, or appl a sepia tone.

Aside from changing colors, the Quart filters let ou add other effects to
documents and images, create a bespoke compression filter for reducing
file si e hen e porting images, etc.

In this step-b -step tutorial, e re going to sho ou ho to take advantage

of Previe and the Quart filters for eas conversion of colorful PDF la outs
into their monochromatic counterparts.

Converting a color PDF to B&W on your Mac

The Previe app comes installed on ever Mac.

1) Open a PDF file in Preview on our Mac.

TIP: Use the Print dialog bo in an app and then click the PDF popup menu x
at the bottom of the indo to access the option to open the current
document as a PDF file in the Previe app.

2) Click Previe s File menu and choose Export.

3) T pe the file name ne t to Export As.

4) Click the popup menu ne t to Format, then choose the option PDF.

5) Click the popup menu ne t to Quart Filter and choose Black & White.

6) Click the Save button to e port the file at a target location as a black &
hite PDF.

The ne l saved file is stripped of the color completel . x

An rasteri ed image formats, vector graphics, embedded fonts and other

content in our PDF becomes black and hite. Depending on the la out, the
number of images and their si es and other factors, the resulting PDF ma
have a smaller or greater file si e than the original.

The original PDF file ith colors, at left, and its converted B&W version, at
right.

If the original PDF is just a rasteri ed image such as a JPEG file, then
appl ing the black and hite filter ma significantl reduce its file si e. The
black & hite filter does not use dithering techniques to simulate shades of
gre on monochromatic images, meaning our resulting document ill look
like an old photocop of the original.

To give our PDF the smooth gradients, use the Gra Tone filter instead.

TIP: If ou convert PDF files to black and hite on a regular basis, consider

automating the hole process b taking advantage of Automator to
e pedite the job.

The monochromatic filter is hand hen printing school project, ne sletters x

and other colorful designs via a black and hite laser printer, ithout
trusting the printer to do the conversion.

Ho ever, ou ll still ant to select a specific option for black and hite in
our printer driver to avoid using color inks for printing a monochromatic
PDF.
