INTRODUCTION • A summary is a record in a reader's own words that gives the main points of a piece of writing such as a
newspaper article, the chapter of a book, or even a whole book. It is also possible to summarize something that
you have heard, such as a lecture, or something that you have seen and heard, such as a movie. A summary
omits details and does not include the reader's interpretation of the original.
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS • Reading and Viewing CAN YOU?

VALUES Communicate effectively and accurately through writing.

What is a good summary?

1. A good summary should give an objective outline of the whole piece of writing. It should answer basic questions about
the original text such as "Who did what, where, and when?", or "What is the main idea of the text?", "What are the main
supporting points?", "What are the major pieces of evidence?"
2. You should not give your own ideas or criticisms as part of the summary.
3. A good summary should not include selected examples, details, or information which are not relevant to the question.
4. A good summary may use key words from the original text but should not contain whole phrases or sentences from the
original text.

PLANNING AN EVENT

The first and most important step in planning a successful event is to think carefully about why you want to host it
and what you want to achieve. Make sure that all the steps you take lead to the goals and objectives.

Any event takes an intensive team effort to handle all of the details. Allocate roles and responsibilities early on in the
process. There are many areas to cover, details to attend to and decisions to make – someone needs to do it.

Give yourself enough time! Ideally, you should have four to six months to plan, depending on the nature of the event.
Your event's date will have a big impact on how many people will attend. Keep public holidays, long weekends and
school holidays in mind.

When you choose a venue, look at the options from your guests' viewpoint. Make sure that the location is safe and
well lit, easily accessible and with plenty of parking.

Costs can spiral out of control when you do not stay within a budget. Think about how much you can afford to spend
on this event and ask yourself if this budget will allow you to achieve your objectives.

Some events might need the use of microphones, lighting and computers for them to be successful. Test all technical
equipment before the time to avoid a last-minute rush.

If you decide to serve food at your event, ensure that you respect cultural and religious variations; also accommodate
those with special dietary requirements.[Adapted from Macmillan Year Planner, 2017]
The following points form the answer to the question. Look at how the quotations were written in own words.

ACTIVITY: SUMMARY WRITING
QUESTION
Read the passage below and write down seven main points on how to get out of bed in the morning without any
hesitation.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. List SEVEN points in full sentences, using not more than 70 words.
2. Your summary must be written in point form.
3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7 and leave a line open between sentences.
4. Write only ONE point per sentence.
5. Use your OWN words as far as possible.
6. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary.
Get out of bed with a spring in your step
Pounding the pavements at 7am isn't for everyone, but if you can manage some gentle movement it can help wake up body and
mind.
If you know you have something nutritious and delicious to eat, then you might be more likely to get out of bed for it! Rather than
rush out of the door with a slice of toast, make time for a breakfast you really enjoy and that will set you up with enough energy to
last until lunch time. If you're still not motivated enough to get up, then making a morning plan with friends might give you an extra
nudge out of bed.
Snoozing the alarm can be a difficult habit to break and at first seems counter intuitive, with many of us thinking that an extra ten
minutes sleep will help us feel more energized when we do get out of bed. However, according to experts hitting the snooze
button repeatedly does not give you good quality sleep as you don't have time to fall back into a deep sleep, so try to get up as
soon as your alarm goes off.
Just as dimming down the lights at night helps encourage production of the hormone melatonin, which makes us feel sleepy,
exposing yourself to light in the morning will help to stop production, therefore waking you up.
After a full night's sleep, you're probably a little dehydrated, and for whatever reason, drinking water just seems to help the body
realize that it's time to get up. Alcohol can make you feel sleepy but consumed too close to bedtime can also disrupt sleep.
