Earth Day

Mr. Conway told all his student’s that Earth Day was coming
up soon and they should all come up with an idea for a project.
Whichever idea was the best would be the activity that the
whole class would participate in on Earth Day. Everyone thought
really hard about their idea and presented it on Friday.

Miguel said, “We should start recycling at school. We could set up large bins in the
cafeteria and around the playground. Then, when people are done eating lunch, they
can put their recyclable’s in the bins instead of the trash.”

“Great idea, Miguel!” Mr. Conway praised. “Who else has an idea?”

Emma said, “We could encourage everyone to ride their bikes instead of using cars
or school busses. We could make big posters and try and encourage our parents to
ride bikes to work too.”

“Another great idea!” Mr. Conway said, and Emma smiled. “Who else has an
idea?”

Kim said, “At my house we grow a vegetable garden every year, and eat what we
grow. Maybe we could start a garden here at school and serve the vegetables in the
cafeteria.”

Mr. Conway said, “I like that idea a lot. I’ll have to discuss it with the principal
though. Who else has an idea?”

Johnny said, “I heard that people can save a lot of energy by switching to
florescent light bulbs, but I know not everybody has them. Let’s have a light bulb drive,
where we collect florescent light bulbs, or money to buy them, and give them to
people who need them.”

“All of these are terrific ideas!” Mr. Conway said. “They would all help the Earth by
saving energy, reduce pollutants, and helping our world stay healthy and clean. I don’t
know how I’ll decide which one to pick.”

Miguel raised his hand and Mr. Conway called on him. Miguel said, “Why do you
have to pick just one? Why don’t we do them all?” Everyone in the class applauded
loudly, and Mr. Conway nodded his head in agreement.

The class divided into teams. Miguel and his team got large bins and labeled them
for recycling. They made sure to make bright signs reminding students not to put
garbage like food in the recycling bins.

Emma and her team made signs encouraging everyone to ride bicycles, with great
results. On Earth Day, every bike rack in the school was full. Johnny had equally good
results with his light bulb drive and was able to give packs to every family who needed
them. The principle of the school even gave permission for Kim’s team to start a school
garden. What can your school do for Earth Day?
