Exploring the Informal Spaces –

A competition from TOTO Co., Ltd. - An Event in TOTO Architect Talk 2023

This September, TOTO Vietnam Co., Ltd., in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Architects -
the first and official professional organization of the Architecture industry, launched the Architectural
Design Competition with the theme "Exploring the Informal Space”. The contest for anyone in Vietnam
from 18 to 35 years old will start on September 22, 2023, and the submission period will end on October
29, 2023.

Every metropolitan region is frequently viewed as an organic structure made up of a variety of elements,
including society, culture, the environment, economics, etc. However, there are underlying informal
components along with the Issues that can be easily seen in the urban context. What link does this
urban structure system's informal components have to other aspects, or are they just signs of disorder?

Some examples of informal spaces include:

– Alleyways: Alleyways are often used for informal activities such as parking, loading and unloading, and
storing goods.

– Underpasses: Underpasses are often used for informal activities such as skateboarding, graffiti, and
sleeping.

– Spaces in between buildings, rooftops

The goal of the contest is to explore the potential of informal spaces to contribute to urban ecology.
Participants are asked to come up with architectural interventions that enhance the ecological benefits
of informal spaces, while also addressing any challenges they may pose.
