Half wave rectifier

A half-wave rectifier converts an AC signal to DC by passing either the negative or

positive half-cycle of the waveform and blocking the other. Half-wave rectifiers can be
easily constructed using only one diode, but are less efficient than full-wave rectifiers.

The maximum efficiency of a half-wave rectifier is 40.6%. The proportion of dc output

power to input power is used to define a rectifier's efficiency.

Rectifier: A rectifier is a device that converts an alternating current into a direct current.
A p-n junction can be used as a rectifier because it permits current in one direction only.

There are types of rectifiers i.e. half-wave rectifier and full-wave rectifier.

In half-wave rectifier, there is only one diode, so during the positive half cycle
diode conducts and gives the output similarly in the negative half cycle
diode don’t conduct and gives no output.
In a half-wave rectifier, the output frequency (ω) for the half-wave rectifier is
the same as that of ac.
English

Full Wave rectifier:

In a full-wave rectifier during a positive half cycle, one diode conducts and gives
the output similarly in the negative half cycle another diode conducts and gives
the output. Hence at a time, only one diode will be ON for a one-half cycle.
In the case of the full-wave rectifier, the fundamental frequency = 2 × main
frequency.

If input frequency is 100 Hz for a half-wave rectifier, the ripple frequency of it would be
_______.

1. 150 Hz

2. 200 Hz

3. 100 Hz

4. 50 Hz

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 3 : 100 Hz
English

Half Wave Rectifier Question 9 Detailed Solution Download Soln PDF

The correct answer is option 3): (100 Hz)

Concept:

The ripple frequency of the output and input is the same.

This is because one half-cycle of input is passed and another half-cycle is seized.

So, effectively the frequency is the same

so fin = fr

the ripple frequency = 100 Hz

The ripple frequency of a half-wave rectifier is f0, where f0 is the input line frequency.
The ripple frequency of a center-tapped or a bridge-type full-wave rectifier is 2f0.

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 1 : Positive half wave rectifier

Half Wave Rectifier Question 11 Detailed Solution Download Soln PDF

Concept:

Rectifier

It is a circuit that is used to convert AC supply voltage to and Pulsating DC output

voltage.
There are two types of rectifier circuits.
English
1) Half wave rectifier

It is a circuit that allows the one-half cycle of the AC supply voltage blocking the
other half cycle.
This operation can be achieved by using a diode at the output port of the
transformer.

Positive half wave rectifier

In a positive half-wave rectifier diode D will be forward biased for a positive half
cycle of an input AC supply voltage.
Diode D will be off during the negative half cycle for an input AC supply voltage.
As we can see from the above figure the answer will be a positive half-wave
rectifier.

Important Points

Negative half wave rectifier

In a negative half-wave rectifier diode D will be forward biased for a negative half
cycle of an input AC supply voltage.
Diode D will be off during the positive half cycle for an input AC supply voltage.

2) Full-wave rectifier

Center tape type

English

In a Center tape type full-wave rectifier, the input is fed through the center-tapped
transformer, and output is taken from the load resistance RL.
The diode D1 will be forward biased during a positive half cycle of input.
The diode D2 will be forward biased during a negative half cycle of input.
This will produce a continuous pulsating DC output voltage.
PIV of the center tape type is 2Vpeak.

Bridge type

In a bridge rectifier, we use four diodes to increase the PIV rating of the circuit.
The diode D1 and D3 are forward biased during a positive half cycle of input.
The diodes D2 and D4 are forward biased during a negative half cycle of input.
This will produce a continuous pulsating DC output voltage.
PIV of the bridge tape type is Vpeak.

Vc = Vimax → capacitor will charge upto max input voltage

Vc = 12 √2 V
