BHIMBAITHIKA
Inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO,
Bhimbaithika is an intriguing landscape of the
Vindhyan Ranges, where time seems to have
stopped, taking you into the Stone Age. The natural
rock shelters have paintings from the Mesolithic
period to the historical period, and they are an
amazing documentation of the life and culture of the
people of those times. They depict a coexistence
between human beings, animals and plants.
These rock shelters are located within the Ratapani
Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over 825.90 sq. km, rich
in flora and fauna, which also maintains a tiger
habitat.

BHOJPUR
Situated on the banks of River Betwa, the
unfinished, early 11th century Bhojeshwara
Temple, with the biggest Shivalinga in the
world, demonstrates the different stages
of temple construction. Well drafted
architectural drawings on the large rock
surfaces, the earthen ramp to carry huge
stones to the heights of the temple, tell
of an ambitious project left unfinished.

Bhojpur also bears testimony to the

ingenious manmade hydraulic system
which continues to Bhopal, where the large
lake ( 30 sq.km) of early 11th century, still
exists; but the larger man made lake of Bhojpur ( 300
sq. km) was destroyed in the 15th century by
Hoshang Shah. The dam broken by him still exists.
