Focus Activity – TIKATIKA

(Focus 2 – How many, even/uneven?)

Review

Teacher: Hello year sevens! I would like you to sing Frere Jacques and show me the rhythm
on your fingers. Do you remember from last lesson how many beats we have? That’s right, we
have four. Ready, here we go

Students:

Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques

Dormez-vous, Dormez-vous

Sonnez les matines, Sonnez le matines

Ding, Dang, Dong

Ding, Dang, Dong

Teacher: Wonderful work everyone! Now, which rhythms did we have in the first two
phrases? Let’s check. Sing and show me the rhythm on your fingers. Ready, let’s go

Students:

Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques

Dormez-vous, Dormez-vous

Teacher: Can you tell me which rhythms you could hear in those two phrases?

Student: Titi and Ta

Teacher: Yes, correct. Titi and Ta. Last lesson we discovered there was a new rhythm in this
song. Now when you sing it, please tell me where you can hear the new rhythm. Continue
using your rhythm fingers. Go, now

Students:

Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques

Dormez-vous, Dormez-vous
Sonnez les matines, Sonnez le matines

Ding, Dang, Dong

Ding, Dang, Dong

So where was the new rhythm and how many times did you hear it?

Student: In phrase three. The rhythm happened twice.

Teacher: Yes twice in phrase three. Well done!

Reason

Teacher: Now year sevens, how many sounds do you think are in that rhythm? Let’s check.
Let’s try clapping phrase three.

Student: 4 sounds

Teacher: Yes, four sounds, on the syllables, ‘sonnez les ma’. Are they even or uneven sounds?
Yes they were even! Let’s sing it again with our rhythm fingers

Students: SING

Teacher: This time, lets hide the new rhythm.

Students: Sing

Teacher: Great, now let’s hide everything except the new rhythm!

Students: Sing

Reinforce

Teacher: Okay, so as we know, Ta has one sound on the beat, and titi has two sounds on the
beat. So how many sounds does the new rhythm have?

Student: Four!

Teacher: Yes, four! Let’s sing the song again, keeping the beat in our feet, and I want you to
raise your hand every time you hear the new rhythm.

Ready? Let’s go (class sings again)
