Activities
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction What I need to know?
The learners will do the walkthrough of the lesson expectations.
The teacher informs the students the following objectives of the
lesson, to:
a. Identify the different types of soil.
b. Describe the characteristics of different types of soil.
c. Classify different examples of soil.
Let’s Review!
Pupils will play the “Stop the Music” Game. The teacher will play a song
entitled “What’s underground”. While the music plays, they are going the
to pass the ball to the person next to them and when the music stops, the
one who holds the ball will answer the question to be given by the
teacher. In this game, the pupils will recall on the previous lesson about
heat, light and sound.
What’s New?
(ENGAGE)
Watch’a
Think?!
The pupils will watch a music video about soil. The teacher will remind
them to remember the facts that will be mentioned in the video for the
comprehension check after viewing.
Comprehension Check:
-What is the song about?
-What are the different types of soil?
-Why are soil important to us?
B. Development What I Know?
(EXPLORE)
The pupils will apply the concepts they learned from the video they have
just watched and explore more about soils in doing this activity.
What to do:
1. Get three samples of soil and place each on separate cups
2. Label each sample with A, B, C
3. Scoop at least two tablespoons of soil from each sample
4. Using a popsicle stick, observe each sample.
5. Write your observations on your science notebook using the table
below at the same time write it on cartolina for posting and
reporting in the class.

TOPSOIL

BEDROCK
The soil is made up of different layers. Each layer has its own
characteristics.
The Topsoil (A-Horizon) is the uppermost layer of the soil. This layer is
rich with organic materials called humus and with minerals needed for
plant growth. Humus comes from decaying plants and animals. The soil’s
dark color is an indication of the presence of humus. Several kinds of
plants can be seen growing on this layer.
The Sub-soil (B-Horizon) is located just below the topsoil. It is composed
of loosely arranged rocks, sand, and clay. This layer is very rich with
minerals that drain from topsoil. When the topsoil is washed out, the
subsoil alone cannot support plant life.
The Parent Rock (C-Horizon) is composed of rocks that are slowly
breaking apart. It is exposed to very little weathering. It does not contain
necessary nutrients and water needed for plant growth.
The Bedrock (C-Horizon) is the lowest of the soil layers. It is made up of
undisturbed large boulders and gravel. This layer contains materials good
for constructing building and making roads. No plant life can survive in
this layer.
What’s it?
Thumbs up, thumbs down!
The pupils will be given a thumbs up and thumbs down hand. The teacher
will read the statements and the pupils will raise a thumbs up hand if they
agree and thumbs down hand if they disagree.
1.The clay has small particles and holds lots of water.
2.The sand has the tiniest particles and has only one color.
3.The sand is sticky when wet.
4.The loam is the best type of soil to grow vegetables.
5. The different types of soil have the same characteristics.
6. The soil has four different layers.
7. Loam soil is good in planting cactus.
8. There are only 2 types of soil, the dry and the wet.
What’s more?
C. Engagement Let’s Practice
The teacher will distribute a copy of the print out picture of soil and the
pupils will label its parts.
What I can do?
(ELABORATE)
Differentiated Activity
The teacher will re-group the pupils into three, depending in their
skills. Each group will have a leader.
House Rules/Standards/Guidelines: (Follow the mnemonic/memory
device.)
POINTS INDICATORS
5 - Shows eagerness and cooperation to do the task, participate
actively, do great help to the group.
4 - Shows eagerness and cooperation to do the task, good followers
only.
3 - Participated but late, with teacher’s supervision.
2 - Activity was done but does not show eagerness to participate or
cooperate.
1 - No interest in participating the activities.
Group Activity:
Group 1 – DRAW ME MY FRIEND!
Instruction: Draw the different types of soil and label it.
Instruction: Complete the table below. Compare the different types of soil
according to their physical characteristics.
2. Texture
3. Ability to
hold
water
What I have learned?
(EVALUATE)
Let’s Wrap-it-up!
The pupils will be asked to accomplish the Tree Map Wherein they will fill
out the boxes by providing the correct information about the types of soil.
