With the development of offshore oil and gas exploitation intensifies, FPSO which having many
advantages can better adapt to the complicated environment of deep sea in numerous offshore
platform. Due to the hull prone to resonance phenomenon, FPSO has more intense motion compared to
other platforms. Therefore, the main challenge of FPSO in the deep sea operation is to design effective
mooring system. This paper introduced the dynamic response analysis methods of FPSO system. Time
domain method of coupling analysis was used. Dynamic responses of catenary and taut inner tower
FPSO system were calculated respectively. According to the current mooring system development, the
article compared and analyzed catenary mooring system and taut mooring system. Moreover, the
results indicated that the position ability and mooring strength of taut mooring system whose
intermediate material is polyester are better than that of catenary mooring system on the premise that
satisfies API specification at the same time.

Abstract

Catenary mooring system and taut mooring system are two widespread mooring systems which are
applied for the floating structures. However, both of them have their inherent drawbacks. The aim is to
develop a new mooring system which will overcome these shortcomings. To validate the efficiency of the
new system, the new mooring system applied to a deepwater FPSO was selected as the numerical
example. The motion performance of the FPSO platform with the new mooring system under different
water depth was simulated employing full time domain coupled analysis method. The numerical
simulation results show that the new mooring system yields very good motion performance compared
to the taut mooring system. Finally the optimal water depth of the new mooring system where the
floating offshore platforms can obtain the best performance was discussed.

Introduction

Floating structures are subjected to different environmental loads during operation activities, normally
including wave, wind and current. The mooring system, which plays a key role in keeping floating
structure on station, is closely related to system safety and operational efficiency. From shallow water to
deepwater, mooring systems are widely used in marine resource exploitation, including oil and gas
exploration, ocean renewable energy harvesting and aquaculture offshore. The mooring system is
generally classified into two types: spread mooring system and single-point mooring system. The spread
mooring system is composed of several mooring lines, which are generally arranged symmetrically. The
single-point mooring system, which includes turret mooring system (internal turret and external turret),
SALM (singe anchor leg mooring) and CALM (catenary anchor leg mooring), is the general mooring type
for ship shape vessels, such as FPSO (floating, production, storage, and offloading). Furthermore, SALM
and CALM could also be used in wave energy converter (WEC) devices.

Designing an efficient and economic mooring system is always a challenging task. The taut and catenary
mooring systems are two widely used systems, which are classified according to stat
