Report and Presentation

Topic/Module

Better Health for Individuals

Due date: Term 1 week 7 Friday 15/03/2024

Task Weighing: 30%

Students learn about health behaviours of young people including positive health status,
protective behaviours and risk factors for health issues relevant to young people. They predict
how risk decreases or increases when multiple factors interact. They explore current research
and information to identify prevalence of, and trends in, the health behaviours of young people
and challenge the accuracy of perceptions of their health behaviours.

This task has two sections. Section 1 is a written response based on research, and Section 2
is an oral presentation based on Section 1.

Section 1 (24 marks)

1. You will select one health behaviour of young people. For example, food habits, body
image, physical activity, drug use, mental health, sexual health or road safety.

2. Conduct research on your chosen health behaviour of young people. Your research
should use credible, relevant sources that explicitly address the following aspects of
the chosen health behaviour:

● Prevalence of, and trends in, this health behaviour


● Main risk factors and preventative behaviours around this health behaviour
● How society perceives the prevalence of this health behaviour
● The accuracy of societal perceptions of this health behaviour in young people

A bibliography of sources used in your research is to be included. Therefore, make


sure that you note down the details of any sources that you use in your research so
that this can be included in your bibliography.

You are encouraged to use a wide variety of research material including, but not limited
to, this list:

Your teacher will advise you how long you will be given to complete this task.

3. Write your written response about your chosen health behaviour based on your
research. Your written response should be no more than 2000 words, excluding your
bibliography. Your teacher will advise you how much time you will have to complete this
section and whether there will be an allocation of in-class time to do so.

Your written response should demonstrate a comprehensive discussion of the four


points noted in Part 2 of Section 1.

When writing your response, make sure you:

● demonstrate an insightful, considered response about your chosen health


behaviour for young people.
● assess and use evidence from your sources (e.g. quotations, statistics) to support
your analysis of your chosen health behaviour for young people.
● use terminology that is appropriate for the content and purpose of this task. ●
acknowledge sources used in both the written report and in the bibliography. ●
structure your response using paragraphs and sub-headings as appropriate.

For example, you might wish to use the following sub-headings:

o Introduction that briefly outlines what your chosen health behaviour is


o Prevalence and trends
o Risk Factors and Protective Behaviours
o Societal perceptions of chosen health behaviour amongst young people o
Accuracy of societal perceptions
● Proofread your response before submission to check for spelling and grammatical
errors and to ensure that it reads well.

You will answer on a separate typed document using 12-point single spacing with normal
margins (2.54cm).

Section 2 (6 marks)

You will present an oral summary of your written response from Section 1 to the class. Your
presentation should be between 4 and 5 minutes in duration.

You may choose to film your presentation prior to the day to show in-class, or present live to
the class. You may include graphs, posters, images, PowerPoint etc. However, ensure you
adhere to the allocated time. It is also advised that any supplementary material used is only
presented to support your presentation which is a summary of Section One.

You will need to provide a transcript of your presentation to your teacher, including any
supplementary material or visual aids used during your presentation.

Task Preparation…
Your teacher will advise when they will check on your progress with the task and what you are
expected to have completed on particular dates. They will also provide you with an
assessment due date for Sections 1 and 2.

Section 1

Research

Your teacher will advise you how much time you have to complete your research for Section 1,
and whether there will be any in class time allocated. You should use the suggested sources in
the task as a starting point for your research. Ensure that you note the details of any sources
that you use in your research so that you can use this information to complete your
bibliography.

Writing the response

Your teacher will advise you if you have any in class allocated time to work on this section. If
this is provided, you are advised to bring your current school textbook, research materials,
Stage 6 PDHPE syllabus and a fully charged laptop to this lesson.

Refer to your school’s Copyright/Plagiarism Policy before submitting work for this assessment,
and adhere strictly to all guidelines and procedures, including around submission of work.

Submitting the response for assessment


You are to submit both an electronic and printed copy of this assessment. Your teacher will
advise how and when each copy is to be uploaded and/or submitted. This may be via the
school intranet, e-mail, USB, saved folder, Turnitin or other electronic method as well as a hard
copy printed and submitted as per your school’s Assessment Policy.

Before you submit your written response, please ensure that you have addressed each of the
requirements for Section 1, including the bibliography and that you have proofread your
response. In text referencing will also need to be included throughout section 1.

Section 2

Your teacher will advise if you have any time allocated in class to work on this section. Before
presenting Section 2, you are encouraged to read the following advice to assist you in your
preparation:

● After summarising Section 1, you may wish to create and use notes/cue cards to assist
with your oral presentation
● Practise your oral presentation with a peer or relative before presenting it to the class ●
When you are presenting, maintain appropriate eye contact with the audience, monitor your
voice projection, keep adequate timing/pacing of your speech, and/or use of supporting
materials (such as PowerPoint presentation or other visuals). These should be used to
support your oral presentation and research and should not be the bulk of your presentation.

Below are suggested responses to the two sections. Teachers should consider the merits
of alternative responses.
