Topic: CONSERVATION OF MASS-Answer Key

YR: 7

1. Conservation of Mass: In any chemical reaction, total mass of reactants is equal to the total mass of
products.
2.

8g

3g

3. Barium chloride reacts with sodium sulphate and forms Barium sulphate and sodium chloride.
Which of the following statements is correct according to the law of conservation of mass?

a.) The total mass of reactants, barium chloride, and sodium sulphate taken is greater than the total
mass of the products, barium sulphate, and sodium chloride.

b.) The total mass of reactants, barium chloride, and sodium sulphate taken is less than the total mass
of the products, barium sulphate, and sodium chloride.

c.) The total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the products.

d.) None of the above

4. 4 grams of hydrogen reacts with some oxygen to make 36 grams of water. Figure out how
much oxygen must have been used by applying the law of conservation of mass?

Hydrogen + Oxygen → Water

Mass given- Hydrogen = 4g, Oxygen = x g, Water = 36 g.

According to the Law of conservation of Mass-

Mass of reactants = Mass of products

4 g+ x g = 36 g
x g = 36 g – 4 g

x = 32 g.

Hence, we can say that 32 g of oxygen was used.

5. Write the word equations for the following reactions:

a) Iron and sulfur react together to make iron sulphide:

iron + sulfur  iron sulfide
b) Sajid burned a small amount of sodium in oxygen to make a white powder called sodium oxide.
sodium + oxygen  sodium oxide
c) Latoyah burned a small strip of magnesium ribbon in oxygen to make magnesium oxide.
magnesium + oxygen  magnesium oxide
6. Reiss heats 15.8g of zinc carbonate. It decomposes to make 9.2g of zinc oxide. Calculate the mass of
carbon dioxide made.
Zinc carbonate  Zinc oxide + carbon dioxide.
15.8g – 9.2g = 6.6g of carbon dioxide
7. 18g of copper carbonate was heated, this decomposed to make copper oxide and carbon dioxide.
Melia measured 14.6g of copper oxide, how much carbon dioxide was made?
copper carbonate copper oxide + carbon dioxide.
18g – 14.6g = 3.4g

8. Balance the equations shown below. Remember that you may only write numbers in front of any of
the formulae, but you may not change any formulae. Some of the equations may already be balanced.

9. When 0.0976g of magnesium was heated in air, 0.1618g of magnesium oxide (MgO) was produced.
What is the mass of oxygen needed to produce 0.1618g MgO?

Magnesium + Oxygen  Magnesium oxide

According to law of conservation of mass,

Total mass reactants = Total mass products

mass of Mg + mass O = mass of MgO
0.0976g Mg + mass O = 0.1618g MgO

mass O = 0.1618g – 0.0976 = 0.0642g O

10. Copy this reaction

C + O2  CO2

a) Identify the reactant(s) and product(s) in this reaction.

b) How many atoms of each type are there total in the reactants?

c) How many atoms of each type are there total in the products?

d) If the total mass of the reactants is 87.6g, what will the total mass of product be and why?

a) C + O2  CO2

b) Carbon (C) and oxygen gas (O2) are the reactants. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the product.

c) 1 x carbon and 2 x oxygen atoms in the reactants.

d) 1 x carbon and 2 x oxygen atoms in the products.

e) If the total mass of the reactants is 87.6g, the total mass of the products will by 87.6g
because mass is not created or destroyed.
