The politics can be transmitted through family.

Family which is considered as the most

natural and least formal institutions as it constitutes the earlies environment for men and
women. Based on scientific literature, family which is the first social environment for a child, is
accepted to have a highly significant role in politicization of child. The family not only offering
living and food to their members, but also introduces the wider aspects of social life for them.
When we are still a child, we listen to what parent said and what they taught us. Thus, the
children learn attitudes towards others including those in authority, both inside and outside the
family. In a liberal democracy like Canada and Britain, family tends to encourage many of the
liberal values, whereas in a communist system like in China-government prevent the entry of
liberal values in a Chinese family. Similarly, as we can see in Malaysia, in an Islamic political
system, the Muslims will not teach their children anything contrary to Islamic values.
Moreover, Herbert H Hyman proclaimed that "The family is the most important
socialization agency into politics." in his book titled Political socialization. According to Ball,
family act as the first window to the outside world for a child. As we can see that, people usually
talk about issues of the society to family first as they are the closest people in our life. This is
because family will always give their real opinion to us as well as supporting us in doing
somethings. For example, when we are having dinner with our family, we will share our joys or
mad of the day as well as discussing the recent issues of the society including the political
issues. Through this method, the transmission of politics from the parents to the child has occur.
As an example, Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham who is the 44th president of the United States. She
acts as the maternal side grandmother of Barack Obama and raised him from 10 years old. She
always provided supports and helped Barach Obama in his political world. Madelyn Dunham’s
attitude inspired her grandson. Madelyn Dunham is an ambitious woman who is the first female
vice President at the Bank of Hawaii. She poured everything she had into Barack Obama and
help him to be who he was.
Furthermore, children will follow their politician’s parents’ footsteps. For instance, in
Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib has followed the steps of his father and became the
sixth prime minister of Malaysia, where his father is also a former prime minister named Abdul
Razak Hussein.
On the other hand, both parents of Nurul Izzah binti Anwar is Malaysian Politician.
Anwar bin Ibrahim is her father while Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail is her mother. As we know,
Anwar Ibrahim is a Malaysian politician who has served as the 12th and 16th Leader of the
Opposition while Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail had served as the 12th Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development in the Pakatan Harapan (PH)
administration. Their daughter, Nurul Izzah binti Anwar has followed their footsteps. She is also
a Malaysian politician and was once a Member of Parliament. We can see that Nurul Izzah was
influenced by her parents since her parents are politician and she has political family
background.
Besides that, children will choose to follow the political beliefs of their parents instead of
others. For example, if there is a working-class family, they would support socialistic measures
while the rich family will support capitalistic policies. The supporter of the government party
will support the government’s position. Also, the opposition’s party will support the opposition’s
position. Thus, it can be said that the family becomes the first place for initiating a public
opinion.
The BBC News Magazine has reported former UK Prime Minister, Tonay Blair, where his
father was an aspiring politician. He did not inherit his parents’ belief, but instead he developed
his own views based on the exposure provided by his parents during dinner. By having an open
discussion about politics in the house, children can have better insight into the complex world
of politics guided by their parents.
In conclusion, family is the first social groups to which an individual belongs. Therefore,
it plays an important role in transmitting political values and ideas to the individual.
