Analyzing Trends- Migration to

Germany
We will be using our critical thinking and data analysis skills to examine why people migrate
(move) from one country to another. To start today, we’ll look at some data from Germany.
1. Go to this link: https://www.migrationpolicy.org/programs/data-hub/charts/immigrant-and-
emigrant-populations-country-origin-and-destination?width=1000&height=850&iframe=true
2. First, look at the interactive map in the middle of the page (see picture). Where it says
“select country”, choose “Germany” (migrants in country). Then, answer the questions
below.

A) What does the title say?

B) What VARIABLES does the map measure?

C) What does each blue dot on the map represent?

D) List some countries that seem to have a LOT of immigration to Germany.

E) List some countries that seem to have LESS immigration to Germany.

F) What are some reasons WHY people may be migrating to Germany from this country?

3. Now, pick TWO countries on the map that have sent migrants to Germany. Hover your
mouse over these countries and record some data below.
Country 1 Country 2
Name of country:
How many migrants in
Germany come from this
country?
(Hint: this is the top number
when you hover your mouse
over the dot)

How many total global

migrants are there in Germany?
(Hint: this is the bottom number
when you hover your mouse
over the dot)

MATH CONNECTION: What

percent of the total global
migrants in Germany come
from this country?
(Hint: to figure this out, you
will have to divide one of the
numbers you found above by
another number...)
