 isa two-dimensional graphical

representation in finding the

principal planes, the principal
stress and the shear stresses.
 used in calculations relating to
mechanical engineering for
materials' strength, geotechnical
engineering for strength of soils,
and structural engineering for
strength of built structures.
 named after Christian Otto Mohr.
The shaft shown in Figure is supported by 2
bearings and carries 2 chain sprockets. The
tensions in the chains exert horizontal forces
on the shaft, tending to bend it in the x-z
plane. Sprocket B exerts a clockwise torque on
the shaft when viewed toward the origin of the
coordinate system along the x-axis. Sprocket C
exerts an equal but opposite torque on the
shaft. For the loading condition shown,
determine the:
a. Principal stress
b. Maximum shear stress

Z = 0.192 in3

sx = 1540 lb-in / 0.192

sx = 8030 psi
txy = 16T/pD3

txy = 16(1100 lb-in) / p(1.25)3

Using the above data, determine the following:

1. The 2 principal stress (σ1 σ2)

2. The maximum shear stress
3. The average principal stress
4. Angle of planes in which the stresses act
5. Draw the complete Mohrs circle, original stress element, principal stress
element and maximum shear stress element.
