Always follow the Medium / High Voltage MV/HV network owner’s specific site safety rules.
Before enter a substation or switchyard, and during time inside, should always obey thus additional
safety advice.
7.UHF PD Measurement
Partial discharge (PD) measurements on HV asset are a well-established tool of quality control and
integral part of the factory acceptance tests. In the field, PD measurements on HV asset have been
considered as not applicable for decades due to a lack of strategies to overcome the tremendous
influence of external noise sources.
As the conventional PD measurement method according to IEC 60270 is known to be sensitive to
unwanted external interferences, UHF detection on or inside e.g. a transformers tank becomes more
and more popular because of its high level of noise immunity.

Therefore, the application of UHF PD measurement technology can help to verify internal PD and can
provide statistically relevant data to be used for PD pattern classification without overlapping
external interferences.
For the Transformer also another feature of the UHF method is its ability to provide a precise trigger
signal for acoustical PD localization.
The UVS 610, together with the MPD 600 measuring system, allows partial discharge
measurements to be taken in liquid-insulated power transformers. The UHF Sensor is inserted
into the power transformer via the vent of an oil drain valve. Partial discharge measurements in
a UHF frequency range can be made inside the tank
• The UHF valve sensor allows partial discharge measurements in high-frequency ranges (upto 1
GHz) in power transformers with liquid insulation.
• UVS 610 is inserted through the oil drain valve (DN 50 and DN 80).
• It is used with a UHF converter; the UVS 610 is connected to the MPD 600 measuring system.
• A useful scale on the slide-rod ensures that the device is correctly inserted into the oil drain valve

High-frequency current transformers HFCT for monitoring and diagnostics The diagnostic
HFCTs are gapped and can be installed and removed easily. They allow spacers to
compensate saturation by high AC currents. Typically used for diagnostic measurements.
The HFCTs for monitoring use, are typical single color to have a better UV resistance and
can be ungapped

The coupling method based on high-frequency current transformer (HFCT sensor) is used especially in
case of ground connection. In this case, a very low current is expected, so no external quadripole is
required. In the MPD software, the internal quadripole of the MPD is selected and the “V” BNC connection
is left disconnected.

Performing a measurement with a HFCT is not compliant to the IEC60270.
Since the IEC60270 was intended for laboratory use only. There is no connection scheme including
something like a high frequency current transformer.

Another use case for HFCTs is the installation at the grounding connection of a high-voltage device.
High-frequency signals can be measured. These signals could either be related to PD inside the test object
or could be considered as interferences from the grounding system.
These interferences are usually created by other electric devices connected to the same grounding
system.

The presence of the measuring taps makes easy the PD measurement process.
The main advantage of the tapped bushings is that no coupling capacitor is necessary.
Thus, some problems caused by the coupling capacitor which might be not PD-free, are avoided.
