FORM 2. PERSONAL STATEMENT
Dear committee,
My name is Thuy, and my full name is Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy. Originating from Vietnam, I’m currently compiling
these documents with the aim of seeking an opportunity to further my studies in Korea. Within this statement, I
endeavor to present to the committee my comprehensive profile, profound motivation, and fundamental background,
all of which I believe align well with the academic pursuit I am applying for. However, prior to delving into a detailed
introduction of myself, I wish to elucidate the motivations behind my aspiration for higher education; the reasons for
selecting Korea as my desired destination; and my desire to participate in the GKS program.
In light of the challenges posed by environmental issues such as climate change and resource depletion, as well as the
emergence of new scientific and technological advancements, and the evolving global geopolitical landscape, nations
worldwide, particularly developed ones, appear to be increasingly investing in science, technology, and fostering
strategic relationships with countries pivotal to their future development. In this dynamic context, I find myself
contemplating the trajectory of the world in the coming years, pondering which academic path will pave the way for a
successful career, and what steps I must take to prepare for the future. After careful introspection, seeking guidance
from esteemed mentors, and reflecting on my aspirations, I have decided to pursue a graduate program that offers
access to cutting-edge knowledge, facilitates the establishment of broad professional networks within the field
conducive to future growth, and provides exposure to diverse working methodologies in a foreign setting distinct from
my own. Envisioning a strategic roadmap for myself, I aim to select an institution in a developed country, where I can
access the most current information and immerse myself in a conducive learning environment. Opting for a
scholarship is imperative as it would enable me to focus solely on my studies and research endeavors, covering
personal living expenses and ensuring my well-being. Furthermore, I aim to choose a country with strong bilateral
relations with my own, as such ties often unblock potential opportunities for individuals adept at navigating both
cultures. Korea emerges as an ideal destination meeting these criteria. Notably, the Korean government has recently
unveiled an ambitious science and technology investment strategy, pledging 170,000 billion won over five years, with
the aim of positioning the nation among the top five global leaders in the field by 2030. This strategic vision promises
favorable conditions for scholars and researchers alike. Drawing on insights from my mentor, I recognize that while
Japan was previously esteemed as a destination for researchers, Korea now offers greater stability, attractiveness, and
technological prowess. Additionally, Korea’s allure extends beyond its academic landscape; its scenic beauty, depicted
vividly in cinematic portrayals, captivates my imagination. Aligning with my mentor’s advice, I endeavor to secure a
stable financial footing and optimal research conditions, allowing me to devote myself entirely to academic pursuits.
The GKS scholarship stands out as the premier opportunity for international students in Korea, as affirmed through
conversations with a colleague who benefitted from the program at Ulsan University (울산대학교), regaling me with
her enriching experiences supported by the GKS initiative.
I have got the chance to know about Chonnam National University (CNU) through another friend, who is working in
the Electrical Engineering Department of CNU. I embarked on a quest for information regarding specialized
departments aligning with my expertise in data analysis. Presently, I am employed by a bank in Hanoi – the capital of
Vietnam, where I serve diligently in the Risk Management Department. Data constitutes an integral component of my
daily tasks, as I engage in comprehensive data analysis tasks within the Business Analysis (BA) team. Our
responsibilities extend to furnishing collected information to the IT team for the development of tailored software
solutions and reports, crucial for ensuring the stability and security of the bank’s systems. Reflecting on my
professional journey, I am inclined to believe that the Department of Data Science at CNU perfectly matches my
aspirations. Extensive research into the Graduate School of Data Science at CNU has revealed insights into its
orientation and training objectives. It is said that the department aims to nurture students into adept data analysis
professionals through a structured curriculum encompassing fundamental theory, programming proficiency, project-
based learning, and problem-solving-oriented subject. This resonates deeply with my academic background and
industrial experience, rendering me confident in the compatibility of my profile with the department’s ethos.
Consequently, I’m poised to articulate my academic and professional journey, substantiating my suitability for
enrollment in the esteemed Department of Data Science at Chonnam National University.
I obtained a B.S. degree in management information systems from the Vietnam Academy of Finance, Hanoi, Vietnam,
graduating in 2020 with an excellent degree (GPA: 3.6/4.0). The Vietnam Academy of Finance is a prestigious
university in Vietnam, where there are four parliamentary chairmen (국회의장) and many successful businessmen
have studied. During the final year of my undergraduate studies, I secured a business analysis internship position with
the Cyber Software company, where I honed my skills in SQL DDL and SQL DML for database management, query
composition, and data manipulation. Moreover, I gained proficiency in implementing functions and procedures in
SQL Server, alongside utilizing UML, Axure RP 8, and Figma. After six months at Cyber Software, driven by my
academic accomplishments, I transitioned to ETC Technology System, because I have received a bachelor's degree,
and I can transfer to a better company. Here, I am lucky to have had an opportunity to work on projects including the
Datawarehouse Project for IBM Vietnam, and the Payment Hub Project with some skills I have such as building data
profiling using IBM Information Analyzer, specializing in banking payment system, and gaining knowledge on
SWIFT message, banking channel and gateway. After with ETC Tech (2 years), I came with Viettel Software, which is
the biggest company in Vietnam. Here, I am a business data analysis engineer. My work is to collect and analyze data
from relevant divisions in the company; communicate, guide, and organize training for divisions about data systems;
write documents such as SRS, and Business Process Modelling Notation (BMPN). After 4 months with Viettel, I came
with VPBank, which belongs to the Top 4 banks in Vietnam. Here I am also the business data analysis engineer and
become a Senior member of VPBank. After undergraduate school, and experience in companies, I have cultivated
some skills, and certificates in the data analysis area. I will send with my proposal some certificates that I have got
until now including a BI Data Analyst Associate Certificate from Microsoft, and Data Warehousing AWS, and a Cloud
Practitioner AWS from Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted
cloud. Besides, I also include some community certificates, that I have gotten from my social activities including two
certificates from the U.S Embassy for my effort as a volunteer for the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative
(YSEALI) of the U.S government. Another certificate from the Vietnam Young Entrepreneur Association (VYEA) for
the organizing committee of the event in 2018.
In my career until now, I met with beloved mentors. As you know, in each duration of our life, having a suitable
mentor is very meaningful. And I appreciate my life because I always meet good mentors in each stage of my life.
They give me advice, and orientations in my life. I am grateful to them a lot. In my proposal, I have also included a
recommendation letter from my best teacher in my university. He motivates me a lot and teaches me a lot. I hope that
you can see some comments about me from him. I also present my study plan and my research proposal. I really hope
that I can read it to see my motivation to become a student at your university. I have not applied for the Embassy track
before, I have just set my target at Chonnam National University, therefore I expect totally in this application.
Finally, I really hope that the committee can give me a chance to do my plan to become a master's student at the
Department of Data Science, Chonnam National University. I am willing to provide any additional information you
may need.

Thank you very much.

Thanks and best regards,

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (투이)

FORM 3. STUDY PLAN

Dear Committee,
It is a pleasure for me to present my study plan to express my desire to study at our university. I draft this plan and I
hope that I will have an opportunity to complete it.
I think that the first step for a suitable study plan should be to determine my conditions and prepare the necessary
thoughts and orientations before beginning a new journey in your country. In this application, I have applied for the
master's program in the Graduate School of Data Science. Data science is one of the foundational pillars of the digital
economy and the 4.0 industrial revolution, so I would like to spend time immersing myself in studying it. I see that the
learning path of the GKS program includes three years, one year for language study, and two years for the main
program. Therefore, the first work I need to carefully focus on is the language program. After that, I will try to pass
the language test to enroll in the main program and cultivate valuable knowledge and reality experience through the
master's program before preparing for the future after time in the academic area. To carry out this plan, the first thing I
need is to have a good language background. Therefore, I will first present my awareness of the importance and plan
for improving and enhancing Korean, and English language.
Nowadays language plays a very crucial role in an open, inclusive, and interconnected world. I have some foreign
friends, they said to me that there are some areas in the world, people can speak several languages. The language is
the main method for exchanging culture and knowledge. Especially, in study and learning, language is the expression
of thinking. I understand that is the reason why the GKS program spent one year learning the Korean language. I
should learn Korean to integrate with the local community, learn about your country’s culture, and better absorb
knowledge during the next main semesters. Motivated by these reasons, I am determined to learn Korean and English
also. I think that the most important thing in learning a language is the environment. If I can come to the Chonnam
National University, I will be immersed in an international environment, where many students from many countries
live. I plan to live in the dormitory, where I can meet with the most international friends. I will live, work, and make
friends with them. By that, I can both study and learn about new cultures in the world. It will be lucky if they also are
GKS scholars. I can invite them to learn Korean together, or even, I will have Korean friends. Besides, I also need to
study hard in the lecture rooms, listen attentively, take notes, and try to practice in class. After class, I plan to discuss
and practice with a friend in the GKS class and ask my Korean friend to better understand the context of each case. I
think it is so good method to improve my language skills.
The language program is wonderful and worth waiting for, but it also ends soon. I need to prepare for the final test, I
should revise in detail the lessons to make sure to memorize important knowledge parts. I will try to pass the final test
with a good score, and then I will participate in the main program. I think the main program will have courses in the
lecture room, some project work, and research work. I will try to learn to cultivate valuable knowledge. In the
bachelor program, I obtained an excellent degree with a high GPA score, and I made for myself a goal of a high GPA
like that for the master's degree. I think that the important thing is to have a suitable method, if I have a good method,
I will approach subjects more easily, and spend less time. I will study effectively by using the three-step method,
learning to know, learning to understand, and learning to memorize, which I have applied very effectively in my
undergraduate program. I learned this method from one of my teachers and I have applied this method very
successfully in my university program. The first step is class time, in the classroom, I will not focus too much on
explaining complex issues of the lesson. Rather than that, I will concentrate on listening to the Professor more, and
take note of the key ideas and important issues that the Professor emphasizes in the lesson. Thus, I will have an
overview of what the lesson is about, and understand and record the most important issues of the lesson. Of course at
this step I probably do not fully understand it, but I recorded it for revising. To do that I will separate each notebook
page into two parts, on the right side I will take note of the content of the lesson, and on the left side. I will spend
explaining important ideas in the second step. In the second step, I will try to explain all the important things of the
lesson and review the lesson from a different perspective. I can ask my friend, and Professor about issues that I can
not understand, but I think Professor will be busy, so I will only ask when absolutely necessary. The last step will be
carried out during the exam preparation time. I will summarize the course, and because I have understood it before, I
will easily remember them. I hope that such methods will give me a good score.
Besides the courses, the research work is also a very important point. I have applied for the research and development
(R&D) program, therefore, the research work is even more important than the course works. I understand that the
research is to discover new things, based on existing things. This work is a hard duty, it needs experience, base
knowledge, research skills, and hard work. I think a good schedule for research work should include three points the
advisor, the method of research, and the topic. I will present my perspective on these points to demonstrate my idea of
having a good research plan. The first point is the advisor, the Professor will give me guidance, research orientation,
support, and encouragement. The Professor will determine almost all remaining factors when they can also give me a
good lab, with high energy labmate, research equipment, financial and psychological support. Every day we can work
very hard but if your work does not track a good direction, all of your efforts will be in vain. On the contrary, if you
follow the guidance of your Professor, with appropriate communication and consensus, you will always be on a path
forward. In addition, if I can choose a good Professor with good condition lab, I will have a better research condition
and can be exposed to modern equipment, which is ideal conditions for research. In a well-organized laboratory, I can
access large projects, thereby building experience for myself. Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to work with
experienced labmates, who can teach me research and experimental skills. As a manager, Professor also encourages
me a lot, and provides me with good financial and research conditions, so that I can focus on research. Therefore, in
the first point, I should observe and study the laboratories in the Department before I can find and connect with a
suitable Professor in the Department, and propose to them my desire to become a professional researcher in the future.
When I have chosen the laboratory and Professor, I will study and learn from labmates, and Professors. I can gain
reality experience through working process with students in the laboratory. I think the best method is to learn from
labmates. I can see by my eye their working methods. I also need to work actively to follow the working rhythm of
the laboratory and get different results. The last point is the research topic, which is a crucial point. I will discuss with
Professor to choose a suitable research direction. Of course, in the master's degree, I think that building a good
background for myself with basic knowledge and learning more research and experimental skills should be a priority,
but I also should choose a research direction. By that, I can be familiar with the research process from basics to
research ideas. The important thing is that I need to arrange my time properly, build, adjust, and update my work plan
at each stage. I made a goal to obtain scholarships and awards from the university, I will study the conditions before,
work hard, and prepare for conditions as soon as possible. I also should spend time participating in social activities,
socializing, and connecting with friends to learn more from interdisciplinary knowledge, entertain, and be more
motivated to study. It is also really meaningful for me.
Finally, talking about my future plan after finishing the GKS program, I still do not have a specific plan. It influences
the research conditions and labor market conditions. If my country or other countries can give me good research
conditions, and when I see that the research conditions are more meaningful compared to the industry works, I may
continue with the PhD program. If not, I will find industry work relating to the data science area, and cultivate the
reality experience, and I may come back with a PhD program in the future if needed. But the thing I can make sure, I
will choose a work that can relate to a Korean company or Korean research organization so that I can take advantage
of my background as well as build economic-social-cultural relationships between Korea and Vietnam, which is
progressing day by day.
Thank you so much for the time to read my study plan in detail. I will be very happy and lucky if I receive the
committee’s approval to allow me to participate in the GKS program.
I hope the committee can give me an opportunity to complete my study plan.
Looking forward to your consideration.

Best regards,
Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy (투이)

Dear Admission Team of Chonnam National University,

I am writing this letter to recommend my old student – Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - for her expectation to become a GKS
student at your university. I am …, Head of the Information Department, Vietnam Academy of Finance, and also her
old teacher in some subject, research project, and the advisor for her bachelor thesis, you can refer to my information
in the above declaration.
With the most trust, I strongly recommend Thuy, a smart, mature, and ambitious student, as a potential applicant for
your program. I have had the opportunity to guide her for the past few years ago when she was a student at Vietnam
Academy of Finance. I detect this student in the teaching time. In the class, when I ask students, she often gives active
perspectives that are interesting and clear. Not many students can have such a comprehensive vision and coherent
thinking. For example, when asking her a demonstrating algorithm to query date data, she feedback method by using
the rule of the number of quarters in the year and the number of repetitions of the month rather than a normal
algorithm using a formal search loop. Many times like that she impressed me a lot. She also has a good view of the
world around her and understands political and socio-economic situations, as well as technological developments and
trends. In her bachelor thesis, she made a model for the …. and received a very good review from the committee. In
the bachelor's degree, I have also guided her to do a research project that looks for numerical prediction solutions for
the stock market. Your research has been awarded by the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade.
She told to me that, she aims to apply for the R&D program of your organization. I believe that Thuy would be an
excellent student for such a program. She has experienced industrial work in good companies, where her knowledge
in school is truly promoted. She is early to become a senior member of VPBank, with a data analyst position. Actually,
the study direction about data in the financial area is a new direction in the academic area, Thuy, and her classmates
are the first classes of students we have trained in this field. After graduating, she got a good job, gained valuable
experience, and grew quickly at work. We still maintain relationships for university-industry cooperation. Through
reality projects, she has good reality skills in the data area, and I think she can quickly access your system.
After a discussion with her, I understand her expectations to become a student at your university. I believe that she
will be an excellent student for your organization. Without hesitation, I highly recommend her for any academic or
project opportunity you may ask her for. I am confident that she will make valuable contributions and shine in your
university.
As her teacher, I hope my excellent student can build a solid career foundation with your national scholarship. If you
want to confirm any information, feel free to contact me through my email.
Sincerely,

Dr. Nguyen Van A
