Respiratory System

By: Nikki Anne A. Espiritu, RMT, DTA

The Respiratory System
• The respiratory system provides for the intake of
oxygen in the inspired air and the eliminate carbon
dioxide produced in the metabolism process.
2 main parts of the respiratory system according to
function
1. Conducting portion
2. Respiratory portion
• Respiratory bronchioles, alveolar duct, alveoli
Nose
• Hollow organ whose cavity is divided into two
irregularly-shaped spaces.
• Nasal cavity / fossae
• Nasal septum
• Composed of bone, cartilage, muscle and connective
tissue.
• Its skin is provided with very fine hairs and usually
has sebaceous glands.
• Consists of stratified squamous epithelial that bears
stiff hairs – strain dust particles.
Nose
• Olfactory epithelium – specialized region of the nasal
epithelium that occupies the roof of the nasal cavity
3 kinds of cells:
• Supporting cells
• Basal cells
• Olfactory cells
Paranasal Sinuses
• Accessory Sinuses of the nose
• Frontal sinus – located above the eyes.
• Ethmoidal sinus – located between the eyes.
• Sphenoidal sinus – located behind the eyes.
• Maxillary sinus – located under the eyes.

• Often sites of painful inflammation called sinusitis.

Paranasal Sinuses
Larynx LARYNX

• Also known as Voice box

Trachea

TRACHEA
The Bronchi
• Composed of ciliated columnar epithelial with goblet
cells.

Types bronchi based on location:

• Extrapulmonary bronchi
• Intrapulmonary bronchi
Bronchioles

• Lobular bronchioles
• Terminal bronchioles
• Respiratory bronchioles
Respiratory Portion - Lungs
• Alveoli
• Type I alveolar cell/ Pneumocyte – highly
specialized squamous epithelial cells
• Type II alveolar cell/ Granular Pneumocyte –
rounded cells that secretes phospholipids
