REVISION WORKSHEET – 1 (2024-25)

CLASS – XI
SUBJECT- PHYSICS
TOPIC- UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS

General Instructions:
1. This revision worksheet has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and
Section E.
2. Section A contains four MCQs and three assertion reasoning of 1 mark each, Section B has
one case-based question of 4 marks, Section C contains three short answer type I questions
of 2 marks each, Section D contains three short answer type II questions of 3 marks each and
Section E contains one long answer type question of 5 marks.
SECTION – A
1. The pair of quantities having the same dimensions is
(a) displacement, velocity
(b) time, frequency
(c) wavelength, focal length
(d) force, acceleration
2. Photon is quantum of radiation with energy E = h ν where ν is frequency and h is Planck’s
constant. The dimensions of h are same as that of
(a) Linear impulse (b)Angular impulse
(c)Linear momentum (d)Angular momentum
3. The number of significant figures in 0.02700 is
(a) 5 (b) 4 (c) 2 (d) 3
4. The sum of the numbers 436.32, 227.2 and 0.301 in appropriate significant figures is
(a) 663.821 (b) 664 (c) 663.8 (d) 63.82

For question number 5 to 7, a statement of assertion is followed by a statement of

reason. Select the correct answer to the question from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as
given below.
(a) Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of
assertion.
(b) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of
assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but reason is false.
(d) Assertion is false and reason is also false.
5. Assertion: The number of significant figures depends on the least count of measuring
instrument.
Reason: Significant figures define the accuracy of measuring instrument.
6. Assertion: Number of significant figures in 0.005 is one and that in 0.500 is three.
Reason: This is because zeros are not significant.
7. Assertion: When we change the unit of measurement of a quantity, its numerical value
changes.
Reason: Smaller the unit of measurement smaller is its numerical value.
SECTION B
Question number 8 is a Case Study based question. Read the case and choose
the correct option.
8. SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
Significant figures, also referred to as significant digits or sig figs, are specific digits within a number
written in positional notation that carry both reliability and necessity in conveying a particular
quantity. When presenting the outcome of a measurement (such as length, pressure, volume, or
mass), if the number of digits exceeds what the measurement instrument can resolve, only the
number of digits within the resolution's capability are dependable and therefore considered
significant.

For instance, if a length measurement yields 114.8 mm, using a ruler with the smallest interval
between marks at 1 mm, the first three digits (1, 1, and 4, representing 114 mm) are certain and
constitute significant figures. Even digits that are uncertain yet reliable are also included in the
significant figures. In this scenario, the last digit (8, contributing 0.8 mm) is likewise considered
significant despite its uncertainty.[1] Therefore, this measurement contains four significant figures.
Now answer questions (i) to (iv).

(i). The number of significant zeroes present in the measured value 0.020040 is
(a) Five (b) Two (c) One (d) Three
(ii). The number of significant figures in the measured value 4.700 m is the same as that in the
value
(a) 4700 m (b) 0.047 m (c) 4070 m (d) 470.0 m
(iii). If a calculated value 2.7465 g contains only three significant figures, the two in
significant digits in it are
(a) 2 and 7 (b) 7 and 4 (c) 6 and 5 (d) 4 and 6
(iv) The uncertain digit in the measurement of a length reported as 41.68 cm is
(a) 4 (b) 1 (c) 6 (d) 8
SECTION C
9. Find the area of the circle of radius 3.458 cm up to correct significant figures.
10. Give the dimensional formula for surface energy, moment of inertia, angular velocity and
gravitational force.
11. The radius of a solid sphere is measured to be 11.24 cm. What is the surface area of the
sphere to appropriate significant figures?
SECTION D
12. If the unit of energy, length and time are 1000 J,100m and 10s respectively the find the unit of
mass in this system of units.
13. A new system of units is proposed in which the unit of mass is α kg, unit of length β m and unitof
time γ s. How much will 5J measures in this new system?
14. State significant figures. State the rules for determining the number of significant figures in a
measurement.
SECTION E
15 (a) Given that the time period T of oscillation of a gas bubble from an explosion under water
depends upon P, d and E where P is the static pressure, d the density of water and E is
the total energy of explosion, find dimensionally a relation for T.
(b) Obtain a relation between the distance travelled by a body in time t, if its initial velocity be u
and acceleration a.
