STSM2616

Sampling Distribution Theory and

Inference.
Assignment 1

I developed this problem myself to try and enjoy the problem

myself. This was an out of the box question formed from
understanding the CLT and doing a series of questions with the
same format that I enjoyed, so I don’t want to copy and paste.
Problem: (a) The attendance mean of STSM module this
semester is 61 and the standard deviation is 8.2. The attendance
registry follows a Normal Distribution.
(i) If an attendance score is taken at random, what is the
probability that the attendance score of a student is less than
68?

(ii) If a sample of from the registry of 50 students in attendance

is taken randomly, what is the probability that the attendance
score is greater than 70?
(iii) What is the distribution of the mean of the attendance score
of 40 students.
Solutions
Before solving this question, it is worth noting that the registry
follows a normal distribution therefore according to CTL I can
conclude that its Sampling Mean distribution follows a Normal
Distribution too under the assumption of repeated sampling.
(i) On the first part of this question
Mean = 61
St. Deviation = 8.2
N=1
(61 − 68)
𝑝(𝑋 < 68) = 𝑝 (𝑧 < )
8.2

= 𝑝(𝑧 < −0.853658)

= 0.01043

(ii) Mean = 61
St. Deviation = 8.2
N = 50
= 𝑝(𝑥 > 70) = 1 − 𝑝(𝑋 < 75)

(61 − 70)
= 1 − 𝑝 (𝑧 < )
(8.2)
( )
√50
= 1 − 𝑝(−2.454220951)

= 1 − 0.9929

= 0.0071

It is worth noting that second part of the calculation now involves an

n number of “samples” as students, meaning repeated sampling
occurred so we utilized the CLT to solve the problem them read the
z value from the z-table of normal distribution regardless of the
population distribution.

(𝑥−𝜇)
1 − 𝑝 (𝑧 < ( (𝜎) ))
√𝑛

This is the utilized formula due to the aforementioned assumptions.

(iii)Here we just show what didtribution the sampling mean follows.

𝜎
𝑋~𝑁 (𝜇; )
√𝑛
8.2
𝑋~𝑁 (61; ) 𝑋~𝑁(61; 1.1596)
√50
