„DOGGY”

BY MARIA
PILCHIN
Presented by Barbos Beatrice
INTRODUCTION

"Doggy" is a story for children, teens

and adults (10+) about school, with its
good and bad (enlightenment
corruption), about a vulnerable child in a
social and family sense, as the country
and his loved ones live in a continuous
and uncertain transition.

Number of pages: 39
MAIN CHARACTER
Andrei Mătăsaru was born in the Year of the
Dog, she has the demeanor of a puppy blamed
by everyone she meets in her path, often petted
by hope and the salami in the fridge.
Needing to survive emotional cold, forced
abandonment, Doggy (that's what they
nicknamed him at school) has a million questions
and ponders his life daily, even if he doesn't
have a good image of what a "happy family"
means.
THE OTHERS
CHARACTERS

Zina (Andrei,s mother,s cousin) Mother and Father

Doamna (as Andrei called her, the

Grandmother
teacher)
When someone doesn't take full responsibility for their
actions, their family, their future children, and the duty to

THEMES
love unconditionally, protect, and educate them, society as
a whole stumbles between traumas and false values.
This children's book (for ages 10+) is built around this
key issue, where characters seem like fractured individuals,
shadows that "stifle" the most vulnerable and least
protected to camouflage their frustrations and
"unbecoming" complexes. Due to recklessness, lack of
common sense, and the breakdown of core values—when a
father forgets about his son, the entire life of the mother
and child is pierced by the lance of society's cruelty.
„Doggy” by Maria Pilchin

The little boy's symbolic mission is to "heal" the hearts of

those who have hurt him: to hug his teacher when she's in
her most humble situation, to defend her by barking like a
puppy (it's his existential state), thus offering her a drop
of affection from his Christ-like love; to forgive his father,
who forgot him; to learn that the dog's life he lived was
actually a lesson about love, common sense,
steadfastness, human dignity, resilience, and
perseverance. For him, challenges become opportunities
and perspectives for growth, for becoming more human.
What I liked and what I didn't

What I liked most about this book was that it highlighted a child's
problems, which can happen to anyone in life. I liked the style of
this book.
I liked this book because it is easy and quick to read, there are few
pages. But, I would say, even though the book is 39 pages, many
themes and issues are touched on.

I didn't like realizing that the Latin "cave canem" meaning

"Beware of the dog" is about people more. Which would mean,
that man does horrible, awful, nasty things, which a dog couldn't
do....
CONCLUSION

Finally, we believe that Doggy by Maria Pilchin is

not a funny story for children, but a sad one for all
of us, as it highlights what we like to forget, to
neglect. Nevertheless, Doggy seems to be a
parable of the inner maturity of the protagonist
caught up in a deep conflict of the whole society: "I
always think of Chisinau. That's where I learned
that being a dog is an art, and cave canem is more
about people."
