Name: FATIMA Semester # 03

Student ID: bc230201829 Lectures covered: 11 to 15

Question # 1:
A string of 2.4 m in length is tied to two points A and B in the horizontal plane. A ring of
2 kN weight which can slide freely along ACB is at C, in equilibrium condition when a
horizontal force F is applied at point C. if the point C is 75 cm below of AB find out the
magnitude of F. the length of AC is 1.5 m.

Solution:
Let,

- d be the distance from the point A to the point where the force F is applied,

- x be the distance from the point A to the point where the ring is attached,

- y be the distance from the point A to the point where the ring reaches equilibrium below
AB.

Given that the length of AC = 1.5m, and the length of string = 2.4m.

Now we can determine the values of x and y, such that:

x + 1.5 + y = 2.4

⟹ x + y = 0.9

The force F creates a clockwise moment around point A, while the weight of the ring creates
an anti-clockwise moment around point A.

The moment created by F about point A is given by F.d, and the moment created by the
weight of the ring (given) is 2kN.y.

At equilibrium, the total moment about pont A is zero. Therefore, we have:

F.d =2kN.y ……(1)

Given that F is applied at a distance of 75cm below AB, so we have:

d = 1.5 – 0.75 = 0.75m.

Now, substituting the values into the equation(1):

F×0.75 = 2kN×y

As we know that: x + y = 0.9 ⟹ y = 0.9 – x

⟹ F×0.75 = 2kN×(0.9 – x)

Now, by solving for F:

F×0.75 = 1.8-2x

1.8−2 x
F=
0.75

For finding x, we can use the fact that the ring reaches at equilibrium when F ia applied 75cm
below AB. Therefore, x + 0.75 = 0.75, which x = 0

1.8
⟹ F=
0.75

F = 2.4kN

So, the magnitude of the force F is 2.4kN.

Question # 2:
The following figure shows the four forces which lie in the same plane acting on a
particle. The magnitudes of these forces and their relative directions are shown in the
figure. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant four forces.

Solution:
F1 = 30N

F2 = 18N

F3 = 24N
F4=10N

Now, add the horizontal components:

Fx = 30N – 24N = 6N

Also, add the vertical components:

Fy = 18N – 10N = 8N

Using Pythagoras theorem,(for finding the magnitude of the resultant force):

R=√ F x 2 + F y 2=√ 62 +82=10

Fy 8
Also , tanθ= = =2
Fx 6
o
⟹ θ=63.4

Question # 3:
Two forces each of magnitudes 12 N act at a point in the direction OA and OB. The angle
between the forces is x . The resultant of two forces has component 14 N in the direction
OA. Find the value of x and the magnitude of resultant of the two forces.

Solution:
Resolve each forces into its components parallel to OA and OB.

F1=12 N (parallel to OA)

F2= 12 N (parallel to OB)

The component of the resultant force is 14 N in the direction of OA. Let the angle between
the the force be "x". Then,

F1+F2(cosx) =14

12 +12(cosx) = 14

⟹12(cosx) = 2

1
⟹ cos x=¿ ¿
6
o
⟹ x=80.40

Now, by using Pythagoras theorem (we can find the resultant force):

R=√ F 12+ F 22 + F1 F2 cos ⁡( x)

R=√ 122 +122 + ( 12 ) (12 ) cos ( 80.40 )

⟹ R=16.97 N

So, the value of x is approximately 80.40 o and the magnitude of resultant force is
approximately 16.97 N .
