6. PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT TASK 2

A MECHANICAL DESIGN PROJECT

Scenario
You have just qualified as a mechanical technician and are applying to various engineering
firms. You've just been invited for an interview at a firm that specialises in developing and
producing car jacks and jack stands. Part of your interview is to make a presentation on an
improvement or modification to an existing car jacks or jack stands.
Specifications provided to you are that the car jack or jack stand must consist of at least
FOUR parts, incorporate a mechanical mechanism, and have the potential to be made
stronger to safely handle more weight. The car jack or jack stand should also have a
universal head, or interchangeable heads to be able to safely fit different vehicles.
You are therefore required to design an improvement or modification to an existing car jack
or jack stand so that it will be able to safely handle more weight, or be easier to operate.

Example of a jack stand with a mechanical mechanism:

NSC PAT: ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN GUIDELINES | 2024

The PAT requires the following FOUR stages:

STAGE 1: Research car jacks and jack stands that incorporates a mechanical
mechanism(s) for its adjustment.
STAGE 2: Find or select a suitable car jack or jack stand consisting of at least FOUR
parts, and that incorporates a mechanical mechanism(s). The car jack or
jack stand that you have selected will forthwith simply be referred to as the
jack in this project (PAT).
NOTE: You are NOT required to purchase a new jack. The selected jack
should therefore be one that is readily available to you.
STAGE 3: Dismantling the jack so that ALL the parts can be examined, measured and
photographed.
STAGE 4: This involves coming up with an improvement or modification of ONE of the
complex main parts, or a combination of the parts of the jack. This will
require the application of the design process as stipulated in the presentation
requirements.

Requirements and specifications of the jack:

• Each learner must have his/her own jack (the jack) for the PAT.
• The jack must be handed in as part of your PAT.
• The jack must consist of at least FOUR parts, and it must incorporate a mechanical
mechanism(s) for its adjustment.
• Your teacher/facilitator must approve the jack to ensure that it meets all the
requirements and that a PAT of an appropriate higher order of Grade 12 complexity can
be produced.

PHASE 1: PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Analyse the given scenario and formulate a design brief in two paragraphs:
• The first paragraph must, in your own words, include a brief background to the project,
as well as a detailed and comprehensive description of what must be designed.
• The second paragraph must, in your own words, give a clear overview of your role in
the project, as well as a description of the entire design process that you are going to
implement to complete this project (PAT).

From the scenario and your teacher/facilitator's management plan, include the following
as part of the design brief:
• Your own list of ALL the specifications of the jack.
• Your own list of at least THREE constraints of the jack.
• Your own management plan, which specifies target dates for the completion of each
presentation requirement.

2. Conduct research on:

• The material that is used for each individual component of the jack.
• The specific design features and/or function/purpose of each individual component of
the jack.
• The design, components and mechanical movement of another jack that is similar to
the one that you have selected.

© SACAI COPYRIGHT Page 20 of 30 Please turn over

NSC PAT: ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN GUIDELINES | 2024

NOTE:
The research must be relevant and usable and should therefore primarily be in the form
of graphic material, i.e. pictures and/or illustrations.
Evidence of ALL the relevant resource material gathered and used must be presented
as proof that the required research had been done.
The presentation of the research material may not exceed THREE A4 or ONE A3 pages
per research topic.
The first two research requirements will primarily be hands-on investigative research,
which can be presented by using a comprehensive set of detailed photographs, taken
during the third stage, with labels and/or notes indicating the material and the function
(purpose) of each individual part.
The evidence of the other similar jack may be in the form of a comprehensive set of
pictures and/or photographs, together with explanatory labels and notes.
There must be clear evidence that the research has been used in the design solution.
Include a list of ALL references (bibliography) as part of the research.

3. Prepare TWO sets of neat, detailed freehand drawings of

TWO possible solutions of the proposed improvement or modification to the identified
main component or a combination of components/parts of the jack.
Each set of freehand drawings must consist of relevant orthographic views and an
isometric drawing(s) that show dimensions, labels, and explanatory notes, as well as
the correct presentation of ALL the features. Include a short explanation of the possible
improvement, modification, or re-design.
NOTE:
Grid/graph paper must be used so that ALL features and fixtures are drawn
proportionally the same size. The grid/graph paper used must be clearly evident or
included in the PAT file/portfolio.
ALL aspects of the freehand drawings, including dimensions, tables, labels, and
possible information blocks must be prepared using pencil ONLY. The use of any
other drawing instruments, e.g. a ruler and compass, will be penalised.
The drawings may be prepared on either A4 or A3 drawing sheets, and NO borders or
title panels are required for the freehand drawings.
The electrical fittings and waste-water disposal systems (sewerage) are NOT required
for the freehand drawings.
ALL aspects of the drawings must comply with the guidelines and conventional
representations contained in the SANS 10111.
These drawings must provide clear evidence that a high level of competency has been
attained in freehand drawing.

4. Select the best solution, which demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the

scenario.
On a separate page, compare and evaluate the TWO freehand solutions by:
• Creating a table with a minimum of FOUR relevant and self-explanatory descriptive
criteria that will facilitate measurable comparisons.
• Create and apply a simple, self-explanatory rating scale to score each solution
against each criterion.
• Justifying each score by describing the positive and/or negative aspects of each
solution against each criterion.

© SACAI COPYRIGHT Page 21 of 30 Please turn over

NSC PAT: ENGINEERING GRAPHICS AND DESIGN GUIDELINES | 2024

Complete the process by writing a comprehensive summary giving reasons for the
selected freehand solution. The summary must include whether there were any late
changes made to the selected freehand solution, or not. If there were, they must be
clearly described.

PHASE 2: PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS

5. Present the jack that you selected during the second stage, and the selected
improvement or modification as a set of working drawings and a pictorial drawing
(5.1, 5.2 and 5.3) that meet the following criteria:
• All the working drawings must be presented on appropriately sized drawing sheets,
correctly set up with borders. ONLY the first working drawing’s drawing sheet (i.e. for
5.1) must be set up with an appropriate and complete mechanical title block, as
presented in the SACAI or DBE NSC Paper 2 analytical questions.
• The drawings must provide clear evidence that a high level of competency had been
attained in the following required EGD drawing methods:
 Instrument drawing
 CAD (Computer-aided Drawing/Design)

NOTE:
ONE entire working drawing (i.e. 5.1.1, 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 or 5.2) should be prepared using
drawing instruments and the other using a CAD program.
The isometric drawing (5.3) may be prepared by using drawing instruments or by using
a CAD program.
ALL CAD drawings must however be prepared under the supervision of the EGD
teacher/facilitator. If this is not possible, ALL the required drawings must be prepared
using drawing instruments, still under the supervision of the EGD teacher/facilitator.
The history of the development of the CAD drawing must be kept, and printed copies of
all CAD drawings must be included in the portfolio.

• ALL aspects of all working drawings must comply with the guidelines and conventional
representations contained in the SANS 10111.

5.1 Draw, to a suitable scale and in third-angle orthographic projection, an ASSEMBLY

DRAWING of the jack, that clearly shows all the parts before any improvements or
modifications have been affected.

The assembly drawing must show the following FOUR views:

5.1.1 The FRONT VIEW
5.1.2 A SECOND PRIMARY VIEW
5.1.3 Any other TWO SECONDARY VIEWS

NOTE:
TWO of the views must be sectioned or contain types of sections.
