Quadrat Method
Quadrat Method
Quadrat Method
Aim:
To estimate the number of static organisms in an area
Skill:
AI & MM
Method:
1. A quadrat was made
2. The quadrat was placed 5 times in different parts of a area
3. Long string plants were counted for each time the quadrat was placed in a different area
Background information:
Quadrats serve as tools for gathering information about the abundance, arrangement, and
variety of species in a designated space. By partitioning the study area into uniform sections,
researchers can systematically document the species present in each quadrant and their
quantities. This approach is fundamental in ecological studies, conservation endeavors, and
evaluations of environmental impact. It provides insights into how species are spread out, allows
for estimating population densities, and aids in evaluating the richness of biodiversity.
Calculations:
The mean of the number of organisms=
Total number of string plant / total number of quadrat placed down
Quadrat 1: 66 plants
Quadrat 2: 55 plants
Quadrat 3: 16 plants
Quadrat 4: 61 plants
Quadrat 5: 7 plants +
—------------------------------
Total= 205 plants
205
𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑠𝑚𝑠: 5
= 41
Area of quadrat=
Length: 1m
Width: 1m
2
Length x width = 1 x 1= 1𝑚
2
Area of environment= 50𝑚
Population size=
Mean number of organism per quadrat x area of environment / area of quadrat
41×52
1
= 2132
Explanation of results:
Different spots in the area had differing amounts of string plant. These results show the mean
number of organisms in the area and the population size. This also proves that the population
distribution is not equal.
Conclusion:
The estimated number of static organisms of string plants is 41 per quadrat.
