Q1. (1 mark)
A (1.5 kW) Air Condition (AC) is used to cool a room for (4 hours each day). Calculate the amount
of electrical energy is used by the AC per day.
a. 6 kWh
b. 6000 kWh
c. 60 kWh
d. 600 kWh
e. 180 kWh
Answer:

Q2. (2 marks)
Given (1 L = 1 kg) of water at (30 ◦C) in an electric jug with (1000 W = 1000 J/s) immersion heater
element (efficiency: 100%). How long will it take to bring it to the boil (100 ◦C)? Please consider
that specific heat capacity of water = (4000 J/kg.K).
Kindly note that:
 Heat Energy = Weight * Specific heat capacity * Temperature difference
 Time = Heat Energy / Power
Answer:

Q3. (2 marks)
A storage heater contains concrete blocks with total volume of (0.15 m 3). The concrete has a
density of 2400 kg/m3, and a specific heat capacity of (3300 J/kg.K). Ignoring heat losses,
calculate the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of the blocks from (15 °C) to (30
°C).
Kindly note that:
 Mass = Density x Volume
 H = m c (θ 2 –θ 1)
