FLUID PROPERTIES AND PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS
(February 2024)

QUESTIONS ON FLUID PROPERTIES (CHAPTERS 1 & 2)

1.0 A fluid has relative density = 0.80 and absolute viscosity = 30 x 10-3 N.s/m2. Determine
the kinematic viscosity of this fluid. [3.75 x 10-5 m2/s]

2.0 A liquid that contains a volume of 35 litres and weighs 200N. Calculate the density of
the liquid. [582.5 kg/m3]

3.0 Considering a local atmospheric pressure of 101 kPa, find the absolute pressure on a
diver at a depth of 20 m in sea water that has relative density of 1.035. [304.1 kPa]

4.0 Imagine you have 20 litres of oil that weighs 148 N. Determine the following:
a) Specific gravity. [0.754]
b) Specific weight. [7.4 kN/m3]

5.0 A fluid has a kinematic viscosity of 6 cm2/s at 200oC. Its density is 986 kg/m3. Calculate
the coefficient of viscosity of the fluid. [0.59 Ns/m2]

6.0 A cylindrical can, 185 mm in diameter, is filled with oil to the depth of 120 mm. The
oil has a mass of 2.56 kg. Calculate the following:
a) Mass density. [793.6 kg/m3]
b) Specific weight. [7.79 kN/m3]
c) Specific gravity. [0.794]

7.0 A storage vessel for liquid petrol (SG = 0.68) is a vertical cylinder 10 m in diameter. If
the vessel is filled to a depth of 6.75 m, calculate the mass and weight of the petrol.
