Assume the flow rate for this clarifier is 7100 m 3/day, an
overflow rate of 40 m3/(day.m2), a side water depth of 4.3 m, a detention time of 20 min in the feedwell, and a depth of feedwell equal to 50% of the tank depth. To complete the design provide the following: Diameter of tank Diameter and depth of feedwell Check of velocity across sludge zone Calculation of the weir loading rate
The diameter of the tank is calculated as follows:
Surface area, At = Q / v0 = 7100 / 40 = 177.5 m2 Dtank = (A x 4 / π)1/2 = (177.5 x 4 / π )1/2 = 15.03 m The feedwell dimensions are estimated as follows: Vf = Q x HDT = 7100 x (20 / 1440) = 98.6 m3 Depth of feedwell, Hdf = (50/100) (4.3) = 2.15 m Surface area of feedwell = Vf / Hdf = 98.6 / 2.15 = 45.86 m2 Dfeedwell = (Af x 4 / π)1/2 = (45.86 x 4 / π )1/2 = 7.64 m The flow velocity: The area of the cylinder through which the wastewater must flow is Acylinder = π(Df)h = π x 7.64 x (4.3 – 2.15) = 51.6 m2 Note that h = side water depth minus the depth of the feedwell. The velocity through this area is v = 7100 / (51.6 x 86400) = 0.002 m/s The weir loading rate: The weir loading rate (WLR) is the flow rate divided by the perimeter of the tank. At the design flowrate: WLR = Q/πD = 7100 / (π x 15) = 151 m3/(day.m)
