A7 Term B Lesson 6 – Symmetry in Coordinate Geometry

Symmetry in Coordinate Geometry

【Practice】
Write the coordinates of points A, B, and C, and the quadrants they are in.

【Exploration 1】
(a) Point A' is the reflection point of point A about the x-axis. Find the coordinates of point A'.
(b) Point A'' is the reflection point of point A about the y-axis. Find the coordinates of point A''.

A7 Term B Lesson 6 – Symmetry in Coordinate Geometry

【Practice】
(a) Find the reflection point of point B about the x-axis.
(b) Find the reflection point of point C about the y-axis.
(c) If point A is the reflection point of point P (a+1, b) about the x-axis, find the values of a and b.

【Ask 1】
(a) Given that point M (a, -4) and point N (5,b) are symmetrical about the y-axis, find the value of
a+b.
(b) In a coordinate pane, if point P (a-3,1) and point Q (2,b+1) are symmetrical about the x-axis, find
the value of a+b.

【Act 1】
Given that point M (a,2) and point N (-3, b) are symmetrical about the x-axis, find the value of a+b.
(A) 1 (B) -1 (C) 5 (D) -5

【Exploration 2】
As shown below, in a coordinate plane, the coordinates of point A are (3, -2). Line MN is parallel to
the x-axis and intersects the y-axis at point C (0, 1). If points B and A are symmetrical to line MN,
find the coordinates of point B.

【Ask 2】
Reflect △ABC in line MN to obtain its image △A'B'C'. Write the coordinates of vertices A', B', and
C'.

【Act 2.1】
As shown below, in a coordinate plane, the coordinates of point P are (-2,1). Line l is parallel to the x-
axis and intersects the y-axis at (0, -1). If points Q and P are symmetrical to line l, find the coordinates
of point Q.
(A) (−2, -1) (B) (−2, -2) (C) (-2, -3) (D) (2, -1)

【Act 2.2】
As shown below, in a coordinate plane, the coordinates of point A are (-4,3). Line MN is parallel to
the y-axis and intersects the x-axis at point B (2,0). If points P and A are symmetrical to the x-axis,
points Q and P are symmetrical to line MN, find the coordinates of point Q.

【Exploration 3】
The distance from the object to the reflection point is equal to the distance from the reflection point to
the image.
The point reflection of △ABC about the origin is △A'B'C'. Given A (1,4), B (1, 1), and C (5, 1), write
the coordinates of points A', B', and C'.
