VCE-CHANCELLOR'S MESSAGE
Dr P Vijayan, The first Vice-Chancellor of MU
The birth of ndian Maritime University is a long cherished dream of the maritime community of
ndia. The MU has been established as a Central University by the Government of ndia under
an
Act of Parliament, namely, the ndian Maritime University Act 2008. The Act was brought into
force
on 14th November 2008 and notified in the Gazette of ndia. The University has integrated into its
fold the existing seven maritime academic institutions, namely, National Maritime Academy-
Chennai, T S Chanakya- Mumbai, Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies &
Research Mumbai, Marine Engineering Research nstitute-Mumbai, Marine Engineering
Research
nstitute- Kolkata, ndian nstitute of Port Management-Kolkata and National Ship Design &
Research Centre- Visaskhapatnam.
MU moves forward with pride and renewed zeal as it moves into its third academic session
since
inception. The University has made rapid strides in exploring academic collaborations with
internationally acclaimed institutions. We are also exploring proposals for setting up of offshore
campuses in Malaysia, UAE and South Africa. The Department of Marine Engineering and
Nautical
Science have performed with academic merit and distinction. All our campuses are abuzz with
activities and scholastic events. On the global front, the maritime sector is facing a fast paced
growth
and of course with growth comes related challenges. However, MU has spared no effort in
bringing
an all-round development of the students so as to mould them to face the challenges thrown up
by
the seafaring profession. Striving towards excellence, MU seeks to provide trained maritime
professionals to the entire globe and aspires for a brighter tomorrow.
f you are an individual who is fascinated by the oceans that drive international economies, we
invite
you to explore the possibilities that the ndian Maritime University has to offer and embark on a
remarkable journey with us. We look forward to help you fulfill your ambition. Come, be part of
the
Blue Revolution.
Wishing you the very best in your aspirations.

The Merchant Navy
Merchant Navy Career is one of the most professionally sound & satisfying career which
any
young person would like to acquire in his life. This career has been primarily male
oriented
although legally there is no ban on girls taking up this profession. However, over the
years it
has become very clear that the girls are not willing to choose this profession even in the
countries where there is not much of disparity or inhibitions between men and women
working in various professions. n ndia, so far there have been only handful of girls who
have decided to choose this career and it is yet to be seen whether they find it
satisfactory
and to their liking.
For the young boys this is one of the best careers among the various professions which
are
available in ndia. t gives considerable job satisfaction, it is economically very lucrative
and
it also leads to various openings for those who would not like to continue working on
ships
for a long time but would be interested in occupying various prestigious positions in
merchant navy related jobs ashore.
The basic requirement for such a young person is that he should:
(a) be reasonably physically fit,
(b) be willing to work hard both physically and mentally,
(c) have a liking for traveling across the world.
Naturally, by virtue of having to work onboard the ships, he would be away from his
family
for long duration and would probably be cut off from the mainstream of society ashore.
However, these drawbacks are compensated to a considerable extent by modern mode
of
communications which has now been incorporated on board every ship and which
enables
him to keep in touch with all his near and dear ones regardless of where his ship is in
any
part of the world.
4
Future Prospects
All navigating officers and marine engineers do have the facility that if they wish to settle
down in a shore job then they can opt for various marine related jobs as follows:
01. Surveyors and Examiners employed by Government of ndia
02. Trainers in various training institutions both in Government and private sector
03. Surveyors employed by various classification Societies
04. Pilots employed by Major Ports for bringing in and taking out ships
05. Surveyors employed by various private organizations for settlement of insurance
claims,
damage assessment and cargo calculations, etc.
06. Chartering and brokering for fixture of ships to carry cargo as well as for sale and
purchase of ships.
07. Technical Superintendents employed by Shipping Companies to oversee the proper
operation of their ships.
08. Officers employed by agencies who look after all the requirements of foreign ships
coming to ndia.
5
6
Being shore based employment, the wages are not as high as on board the ship.
However,
there are various promotional avenues and perquisites and terminal ashore benefits
which
the seafarers would definitely find it attractive enough.
Many qualified officers have secured shore employment in foreign countries because
the
ndian qualification comply with the highest nternational Standards prescribed by MO
and
these officers can compete favourably with the best in the world.
