 Pleasure trips and holidays were activities of the rich especially young men in

Europe who came into adulthood by taking the “Grand Tour of Europe” for

education and development (Thomas Cook)

 The rich travelled with a large entourage that had to be catered to

 Trips were long due to the reliance on horse and carriage

 Development of railway networks and steam ships made travel less expensive

and tedious and less expensive

 Travel and holiday trips were now accessible to members of the middle class,

 This led to a reduction in the time of travel and increased the comfort of travel.

 Development of day and short stay trips.

 Beginning of organised all-inclusive travel.

 3. Emergence of International and Caribbean Tourism 1900-Contemporary

Tourism Development of air travel making more destinations accessible. Due

to increase economic growth more people are able to afford travel.

 Increase sharing of knowledge with the development of technology and

communication people are made aware of new places to visit.

 Emergence of new types of Tourism; eco-tourism, volunteering tourism,

health tourism, culture tourism among others.
