Different Kinds of Complementary and
Alternative Health Care Modalities

Background Information for Learners:

Our ancestors have used traditional practices for health care years ago.
In this module, you will learn about the different kinds of complementary and
alternative health care modalities and some remedies to treat sickness or
illness.
In our country, Republic Act No. 8423 or Traditional Medicine Act of
1997 provisioned the creation of Philippine Institution and Alternative Health
Care (PITAHC), which works closely with the Department of Health. PITAHC is
also law-making body with regards to the effective use of traditional and
alternative medicine.
These complementary and alternative health care modalities are often
taken for granted because some individuals believed that traditional medical
care could not be enough to treat a person who is ill. A complementary
medicine is availed and integrated with traditional medicine like herbal
medicine which is the practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of plants
while alternative medicine is offered in place of traditional medicine.
